Quick oil change question

Hey, just wanted to ask a quick question. My 08 big dog K-9 just had its 500 miles service done in Nov 08. Now my bike only has about 850 miles. So I have only put about 350 miles since last oil change. I was looking at my maintence log in my owners manuel. It says to replace oil and filter at 500 miles then 2,500 miles. I thought that it might have also said or 6 months whatever comes first but it does not state that in the owners manuel. So, I looked at my oil on the dipstick and it is clean as hell. But I don't want to void my warranty in anyway so just want to get input. If, I can i would rather go ahead and just keep driven the bike without changing yet because I do plan on putting some miles on it soon and just change it at the end of summer.

I don't believe you are required to change it until 2500 but if its been sitting around since November it wouldn't hurt in the long run to go ahead and have fresh oil for the summer. You can change it out in about 15 minutes :hi:

I have been told that you do not have to have to work done at BDM to maintain the warranty coverage for maintenance. Even the 500 ... although everyone should do that one at the dealer since they can analyze your engine performance. Want to be completely safe ... call BDM customer service and just ask them the direct question.

I agree, you don't know what kind of moisture has set in. Oil and Filters are cheap compared to an engine overhaul, just my :zz2cents:

Get the K&P oil filter. Best investment I have made. Plus 3 quarts of new oil is cheap insurance for a healthy engine.

BigDog says OK

I asked BigDog tech support about performing my own service and they said sure. My closest BDM sevice center is about 45 or miles away and wanted to do the service myself, the only thing that you can't do is run the diag (unless you have their software) to download engine stats to them. Anyway this is one of several replies I got form them.

Yes, you can do your own services, just make sure you keep records that
they have been done.

Mobil V twin 20/50 is OK for the engine. Your Big Dog runs Rotella 15/40
in the primary from the factory.
Mobil 75/90 is OK for the transmission.
The oil filter is WIX 52225 chrome or 52215 black for your bike. It can
be purchased at the local parts store.

Great everyone thanks!!!

I got the answer I needed. I'm not going to way until my bike has 2500 miles before I change it but since I only have 350 miles on this oil change I am just going to ride a little longer maybe 500-100 miles then I will change. Besides this damn Jap bike is taking all my time. For the last few days I have been working on replaceing my Stator on my R1. That flywheel was a B*tch!!!! Finally got it off pretty much done with the stator now. I am going to go ahead and replace my regulator also just in case. Don't want to be left on side of the road because the bike is charging again Now, I just pretty much want to do some riding especially since it is memorial weekend. You guys be safe this weekend!!!!!

I don't think you have anything to worry about, but that said, oil is very cheap insurance for that high dollar motor of yours, so my suggestion is to never skimp there.

I agree with Big Mike. These are air-cooled engines which rely heavily on the oil to help dissipate heat while lubricating and cleaning the inside of your engine. Why take chances with the most important part of your bike? Changing oils in all compartments regularly is a good idea, with the engine oil & filter being most critical! As he said, it's "cheap insurance" for your big investment! :)
