Questions About This Big Dog...

Hey everyone, Im looking to get a Big Dog locally and wanted to run a few things by you before as I know very little about these bikes. I came across one and the guy says its a Big Dog with a 94" S&S motor with 5 spd tranny. Says that the tranny and motor have been recently rebuilt and the motor is bored so its actually a 96". Thinks the frame is an 08. 98% of everything is there just needs to be put together. Wants $3500 for it. How does this sound? Any red flags? I can post a link to the craigslist ad if anyone wants to see the pics....Thanks for any input!

By the way, there are some sick bikes on here!!:2thumbs:

Welcome from Washington State, hope you enjoy the site. What year is it and can you get the VIN number from the dude?

Roll-the-dice! it'a a crap shoot!

WOW!
Not sure about that 98 (percent?), looks like about 50% of what you need to me, by the photos...

Maybe as parts alone sold seperately? it could be a deal?
IMHO it maybe a Real Project to get it running, street legal. Definately get the VIN and motor S/N numbers and check before offer!

Does he have the Title? Encumberances on it?

-- I like to Ride more than wrench -- just sayin'

PS: is that Mossberg like the double barrel pump action shotgun?
You may wanna keep it loaded nearby... :)
might need it on this deal...

Offer him $1500,- and bring a trailer. I don't think it's a Big Dog but it might be a good deal regardless.

First thing make sure it has a clear title and if you are not an experienced motorcycle mechanic you need to keep looking. I am looking for a basket case or a beater but when they talk about doing their own motor work it gets scary.

Walk away, just walk away, unless you are really looking for a big project and have lots of time and copious amounts of money to lather on it. Sometimes deals are just to good to believe. I'm with Frank on the home grown motor.

I do agree >I don't think its an 04 BDM frame .
Just by looking at the top engine mount and the front end is wrong also .
It looks like a great start to a project bike if your into that . $3,500 is about right .
It makes me wonder why he says its a BDM though ? If your looking for a bike that you want to complete / work on , Check the title, registration , Manufacturers state of origen on the frame , motor and tranny > Check local law inforcement on all the #s also.
There are plenty of great deals on Big Dog , Iron Horse, Borgett . . ect ect bikes
If you want to ride and your not too familure with mechanics. Flash some cash around
and low ball a local seller - hey you never know .
Good luck with whatever you decide to do .

Everything above x 1000. You'd put another 3 or 4 grand in used parts into it, at least. Get it for $1500 or save up and buy a complete dog.

its a hard tail frame if it was an 08 it would have a 330 rear tire which that one does not. the chopper is a softtail this is why its probably a fake

I know !
Its a Big Dogg notice the double g in Dogg .
Thats just something the owner calls the bike . Big Dog was takin
so he used a double g .
Now that BDM had gone under ,I wonder if anyone would care about infringement rights ?

Doesn't look like a deal to me either. Someone on this forum was asking $10k for a running 05 bulldog just the other day. And there's LOTS of shit missing from the pictures. You can drop a grand in controls and bars in a hurry, description says he has tank but I don't see it in the pics. That bike looks like it needs about 20k worth of stuff to make it worth the 15k that he claims.

Thanks for the responses. There's a lot of parts not shown in the pics, says it just needs some misc bolts but mainly to be put together. Has new wiring harness, pipes etc... I rebuild dirt bikes in my free time so I'm capable of working on this( I know its different but same concept). I'm getting the #'s today to check and see. Who knows how he came up with Big Dog...maybe pulling it out of his ass? That's why I figured id ask here because I'm not too familiar either. Thanks and Ill keep you updated!

You Go Mossberg.
Don't be affraid , Any help we can be drop on by .
Find out who did the motor work . See if he has any receipts.
Just do the math on the parts - As I already posted - Looks good to me .
The big thing is really the title ,has it been on the road before.
I've seen people start out with less and have a nice running bike .

Sure sounds to me like he's trying to pass it off as a big dog (regardless of spelling) I think we've pretty much established here that it is NOT a Big Dog. IMO this lowers my level of trust for the guy which is key if you're going to take his word for the transmission and motor rebuild.

I read the parts he does list in the ad and there's still more things that bike needs. Maybe he's got them, maybe not. I don't ever think that bike will be worth 15k...very possibly I could be wrong. But the pics of the parts I do see don't look spectacular to me and really gives me the opinion the guy is full of BS. Does have an S&S sitting there and those aren't cheap, but just don't know the status of this one.

I have NO doubts that this can be restored and made road worthy. The question as others have mentioned is what is it actually going to take? but my opinion on this particular bike if you're looking for a fixer upper....keep looking. Don't want to drag you down if you're really sold on it and if you pull the trigger I hope for 0 extra dollars you can get it up and running just putting some of your own labor. Just how I work when it comes to shopping is if you take a gamble on something like this is the risk worth the potential savings ?.. on this particular bike my opinion is it's not, but if you decide to go for it...good luck

 None of it looks BDM to me either, tire is too small for an "08" frame, motor size is not consistent, and 5 speed transmission doesn't jive either.
