I am new to owning a Big Dog and because this bike has been a real nightmare i wanted to service all the fluids and so forth. after draining the primary i went to get the inspection cover off and after a lot of cussin and sweatin i finally got it off and the CLOWN that owned this bike before me loved silicone and about a half a tube was on the cover. I had bought a seal kit from Bob at Big Dog and it has an o-ring for the main cover and the derby cover but a gasket for the inspection cover and this sure looks to me like it takes a O-Ring or d-ring . does not look like this gasket is right. can someone give me a tip on this? i'd really appreciate it. My Bike is a 2005 Pitbull

There were two different styles of covers. He may have replaced the cover at some point. If the o-ring looks like it will seal, that is what you want to use, with a very light coat of silicone on it. It won't hurt to use the gasket too. Bolts ate just snugged up evenly, or you will break the corner off the cover.
Also, If you just drained the fluid and replacing it, It only take 18 ozs of primary fliud. I you take the whole primary cover off and clean everything, it will take 20 ozs.

and, yes, both the O-ring and gasket are suppose to have small amounts of silicone applied, according to the manual. for the O-ring, just enough to help hold it in the groove long enough to keep it from falling out will installing the cover.

05 manual states 32oz in primary and I’ve used a full quart in my 03, (sold), and now my 08 when serviced. I’m I wrong in doing that?

Sorry Unsprung, going to have to disagree with you and the manual. Many of us that work on these bike all the time, have determined the 32 ozs of fluid is way to much oil, in these small primarys, and is causing the starter to fill with oil when the seal goes bad. 18 ozs is all that is needed to keep the chain oiled.

Agree 100% Shannon, Curtis told me the same thing and I learned this lesson the hard way of course...lol. Believe me too much oil in that primary causes all kinds of head aches.

Good to know Shannon. You’d think I would have read this somewhere by now with my short time on the forum. Thanks for the info and I will drain a few ounces out of mine. I’ve gotten a lot of good info on this forum and still learning.

Dammit Mr. Wright now I got to go drain 12 ounces out of mine LOL
My outer primary was leaking so I pulled the whole thing off cleaned it and put in new seal I also put in the 32 oz because that’s what the manual said to use. While I was in there I adjust the chain. Hopefully the manual is correct on that. It said 5/8 - 7/8 so I set it at 5/8 cold After rotating it three times then finding where it was the tightest then got my 5/8 measurement. I can tell right now I need to jump on here and verify the manual whenever I do anything on it.!!!!:oldbang:

Oil aside overall the manuals are a great reference but they did release some updates over the years based on recalls or fixes, etc. Also, these are in the end old style bikes and just like an old car over the years some slight tweaks to torque specs or whatever seem to be the better way.

Like the clutch hub nut, 150ft/lbs and call it a day. I'm sure some will argue it's too much, but using the forum as a reference to check and double check before you start a new project is a great idea! Using the search feature there isn't hardly any issue that hasn't been covered.

I also just did my primary gasket on my 06 mastiff and stamped right on the primary cover it says it takes 1 1/2 quarts. So that's what I put in, should I drain some out? I am also new to big dogs and learning as i go.

most definitely, get rid of at least 20 oz. not easy to go around and grind off that 1.5 qt. statement in the primary cover on all the '05 and up.

Are you sure it says 1 1/2 quarts? I thought my 08 K9 said 1 quart.

I guess I better take another look. I had 32oz in mine and took out about 10oz. Got 22oz in it now but according to Shannon you really only need 18oz. --- 48oz definitely seems like over kill.

I just checked again to make sure.
