I ended up having a minor problem with my 2004 bulldog so I purchased the service manual. I scanned the entire manual so I would have it electronically on my iPad. I can't believe I am the first one to do this. So how come no one has posted these manuals up on this site? I mean he company is defunct so am i missing something?

Yep. Copyrighted until 2075. Besides that BDPP is still selling them....cant make money if you give your stuff away.

Copyrighted? Until 2075? Just wondering where you learned that information?

That is exactly what I originally thought but there is no mention of copyright in the materiual i purchased at all... As a generall rule a copyright need ot be present on the printied material to be valid.

My service manual looks as if it was nothing more than a color photocopy of a notebook.

I'm guessing if you posted you need it on here someone would PM you and get you a copy. I don't need a manual for my K-9... I have Big Dog Biker and all you fellas!

If you actually do some research on it, you'll find you don't need to have a printed copyright statement.

Who did you buy your service manual from? I was talking to Bob Lockwood a while back and he mentioned the knock off service manuals out there and how they were crap and people would call BDPP about them.

Anyway, I'm sure BDPP has every and all legal rights to the service manuals.

Do I have to register with your office to be protected?
No. In general, registration is voluntary. Copyright exists from the moment the work is created. You will have to register, however, if you wish to bring a lawsuit for infringement of a U.S. work. See Circular 1, Copyright Basics, section “Copyright Registration.”

Even if it is copy righted I don't think that means he can't give it away to other people for free. Just that he can't sell it for a profit. Am I wrong?

He can give it away, but he can't keep a copy for himself. If you are asking if he can make copies and share it for free, the answer is no UNLESS he has permission from the author.

The whole Napster/music piracy law suits years ago was copyright infringement, it's the same with all types of media, including print.

Hell, watch a sports broadcast on tv and you will hear them speak the copyright statement at the end.

Read the copyright link Bubble thanks... I did purchase from BDPP... So I am assuming the one I purchased was original and complete... I am still a bit sceptical thogh because I really would have expected some "legal ease"

I say give it to anyone who wants it. They are fucking worthless anyways. $30 dollar clymer beats the shit out if the BD manual anyday.

Nice Kdub
And what if they started giving away, for free, what you do for a living?
If a company is worthless then just don't buy their shit but it never justifies stealing from them or anybody else.

I don't charge anyone to come to prison. Moreover, I bought my manual. Worst 120 bucks I ever spent. How about instead they charge a reasonable price for the 3 ring binder and 100 pages they call a service manual. Something to the tune of $25 bucks is a little more reasonable.

Personally, I say make money of BDM if you want. They stole and didnt back up their warranty's. Left alot of customers hanging. It would be different if the owner went bankrupt and never opened another business. But, to open the exact business supplying parts for his bike, to me is shady.

I guess I shouldnt promote stealing however, so you are right. Just saying its an over priced pile.

Sure you do
You charge the tax payers.
Now what if they could figure out a way to only pay you some of the time
You wouldn't care much for that would ya
Im a private business man, had a couple of different businesses over the years, and Ive been ripped off. It isn't any different than if someone just reached in your bank account and took money from you with out your permission accept that know one cares so no one pays for it but me.
Juzzzzzz sayin bro juz sayin

Ok just to clarify, I dont charge the tax payers, what I make it only feels like I'm getting paid some of the time, and the government takes money from us all without our permission. Haha. I do have to agree with what was said about bdm having some shady business practices.

No doubt
Ive experienced some nasty things with BD myself but Ive put that behind me and Im movin on
Beyond any of what were saying all a person has to do is look a little here and they will find what it is their looking for.

True that. Why use a manual when I have Carlos to tell me exactly what I'm looking at and what I need to do.

Wow,

I like my service manual from Big Dog Motorcycles which I purchased prior to them closing the doors. I like the pictures too. I will say my Triumph service manuals are better. But, not everyone can be the best! I have learned to fill in the missing information.

Bottom line guys, it's copyright infringement and illegal. I ask you keep it off of Big Dog Biker, I don't need legal trouble again.

What you do is your business. If you are doing something illegal, your best bet is to NOT announce it.

Guys, Sorry I even started this up, never intended to cause any trouble... Where I am still not sure I totally agree with bubble (even after my reading) that it is illegal I don’t want to cause anyone any problems (legal or otherwise) and to be clear I will not be posting the manual for free download. I was actually never planning on it, but rather just asking why; as i was surprised it had not been done already...
In any case, I defiantly agree it is not 'the right thing to do' nor would I consider it ethical, to copy and post it for free download via the internet. Again, I am a newbie here, and I was really just surprised after receiving said manual that it had not been done already and I was trying to get some opinions and reasons why this has not been done in the past - Mostly because I did not correctly understand the copyright rules.
For the record I agree with nuke - I like the manual (a lot of useful info in there - may actually be worth the price)
