I don't really know Sul. He did say it could be down to gasket inconsistencies and I do know that my cylinder studs were being pulled out of the case so that had to be addressed so whether that had a knock on effect I don't know and I'm not knowledgeable enough to say much more. He checked the main bearings and they were OK - he thought it might have been that at first because I was only getting contact in one cylinder. I think the thicker gaskets (only 10 thou thicker) are in there for insurance as much as anything else. I think this engine was either not built quite as it should have been or it was abused before I got it because the usual S&S quality doesn't quite seem to be there. When I had the jugs done the heads were left alone - no shaving off the heads. From memory we took 40 thou off the cylinders.
Actually, for the amount work done, £730 is pretty good I think. He practically took half the bike apart and rebuilt it.
Oh, and in case anyone is interested, i asked him about running it in after having the new rings and cross hatching done and I believe the exact words were "thrash the tits off it". Hopefully I won't get as much blow by now.
