pulling cylinders

I am going to have to pull the cylinders because of an oil leak on the rear one. I have decided to zero the deck at this time, it seems like a good idea since i will already have the motor apart.

My question is what else is involved with this procedure?

The motor is a 117 on a 2007 Mastiff, I have the thunder heart ignition, XXX carb, S&S dual runner intake and Vance & Hinds Big radius pipes.

I would like to bump the compression ratio up to 10.5. I don't plan on changing out the stock cam at this time due to costs and any added issues with the heads and springs.

Don't know what springs you are running but if you are planning a cam change latter I would check into that. I would also consider have the valve guides for wear you may want to change also, since you have the heads off anyway.

I have to wait till the heads are off to see if anything else is needed, and also see which springs i have. i think I want the 585 cam.

I wood like to know from the guys who put the 585 cam in, how much valve train noise do you have, if any. i would appreciate any comments positve or negative

RRRUFF, i agree with you about the springs, do the stiffer springs help if I go with the 585 cam

You may have the valve springs with red stripes and the roller rockers. If you're going to bump compression then you may consider the .600 cam if this is the case. Might as well send the heads over to John Sachs too.

What is the standard deck height on the 117"

:2thumbs:
"five"
without looking it up in my notes i think it was .055 in the hole

also think its a no brainer to send both the jugs and heads to john sachs.

even if you dont have the money its well spent.

Your springs probably are rated for a 585 cam. If your springs have a red stripe then you are good to go. I also would suggest sending your maching to John Sachs. He did my heads a little over a year ago. Excellent work and reasonably priced and Member here on the forum. I have an 05 motor which had the smaller valves and springs. The 585 makes good power and maintains driveability from what I have heard. I am running the S&S 600 cam, good power and driveability also.

I have found the 600 cams on ebay as of late but have not come across any 585 cams. Where are you guys finding the 585 cams?

Thanks,
Rich

Just installed the 585 for Postman this week, bought the cam from Cycle City for $185 and also got the cam installation kit with new seals and O-rings for the install. You can get the cam on Amazon.com and save a little. As to increased noise, there is no additional valve train noise with this cam. Also of interest possibly is the fact that I wrote a e-mail to S&S and asked their advise for the best cam for reliability and power.
They advised the 585 with no engine modifications and said that a change to the 600 would require shaving the jugs, roller lifters, roller rockers, and possible valve guide clearancing. This was a fairly easy install for the 585 and not really a lot of money. I spent two after-work evenings to complete the install and I don't get home until around 7pm.

Just to update everyone, after pulling both cyclinders found that the piston clearance on the wall of the cyclinder was out of limits, so bored both to .010 over, new pistons, new valves, new Night Prowler springs and cut the cyclinders .047 to bump compression and finally got everything together and i am back on the road.

It was more than I planned on doing but once you open the motor, you might as well do it right. Having already gone off the deep end, I just bought a 600 cam from ebay (thanks RRRuff) along with a set of V&H 2-1 pipes (credit John Sachs, he said to change to a 2-1 pipe for better performance), so I am totally broke now, but I will have a nice used set of V&H 2-2 pipes for sale soon!
