The guy before me didn't polish it and I've had water stains for years. I thought I'd be able to get them out but I just spent about 4-5 hr's with a dremel and still didn't get it...
Did that with a few spots, used 2000, 5000 grit and then compound. Worked real good.

I can get to almost everything by hand and using a paint stick, it's a tedious job but a hell of a lot easier than a complete tear down! 
Just wiping it down after every ride keeps it pretty damn clean! But if you got nutt'n better to do, and you enjoy working on it more than riding it, then go for it.
