PROCRASTINATION = EXPENSIVE LAST RIDE

Potential customer called last month to ask what his problem could be with some engine noise, and light smokeing from the pipes on start up, and coasting.
Had the dangerous TP/S&S top end combo. :down:
He was bucks down. I told him to park the bike till he could afford to do the needed work. He didn't.
Well, the bike quit on him last week. Most damage I've seen to date. :eek:
Broken exhaust guide... Got between the valve and seat. May need to replace the exhaust seat. All other guides oblong holes, and one side worn thin.
Pieces of guide got into the cylinder...Need .020" piston kit, because of a deep groove in the liner.
All the other parts to make the geometry right. :2thumbs:

John I respect your knowlege an experience when it comes to engines. Do you think maybe you could do a thread on your different recommended engine combinations? I know it could be endless but I think it'd be interesting. Say maybe starting with a mild cam 585 lift , 600 lift and maybe one or two above. Approximate costs etc. Doing it right of course for maximum reliability.

Been there, done that! Dropped a valve that broke mid-stem into the front cylinder. Had just purchased the bike used. No noise or smoke giving any indication I was having issues. Complete front head, cylinder, piston replacement. About a year later, excessive smoke during decelleration. Valve guide worn like a football. Replaced valve guides on that head. I've purchased the S&S rocker boxes. Looking for some S&S roller rockers. Financially strapped and waiting to find a deal. Procrastination can be monitarily motivated. Once I get the roller rockers, I'll also replace all 4 valves and guides. Until then, I'll just take my chances. Big Dog should have recalled this combination years ago. They know that! Folks like John Sachs that work on these bikes know that and a good many of us with '05/'06 Big Dogs with the TP (total piece-a-shit) rocker boxes know that.
