so I was all ready to go for a ride and when I started the beast i had heavy backfiring and it sounded like crap when I cranked throttle. Also have smoke coming out of breather when it dies. Went for a short ride and if I open the throttle it backfires like crazy and hardly has any power. Any suggestions?

looks like it is cracked but not 100% positive (eyes are not working the way they used to). Can I buy a plug at HD dealership?
Just go to the auto parts store and pick up a vacuum cap. Bring the old one and get one to fit! Should cost all of $1.

Now this might not fix it. I was just suggesting to check the cap because if it leaking it will cause all of that and it's the easiest and best first step. If a new cap doesn't fix it, might be time to clean the carb.

Also sounds like the carb may be flooding. Try adjusting using the ss guide and if that, the cap and fresh gas doesnt fix it I would then clean carb like eric said. Float may be sticking

The cap is broken. Run to town and go get one. Now probably sound like a stupid question but how do I clean the carb? Can't find a thread on it

Simple. 1st, turn off the gas and drain the fuel line. There are 4 screws "under" the carb that hold the bowl on. Remove those(1st remove the drain on the bowl to empty it) screws and the bowl will drop down and off. Be careful of the blue o ring. Download the S&S Carb guide to help you visulize. Clean out the gunk and check the float and needle while your in there. This is a good time to see what size jets your running as well. Unscrew them and clean also. Someone else will pick up what I missed....

Thank you for the help. Changed the vacuum plug and cleaned the bowl and float assembly. No more backfiring but now my Speedometer quit on me. Tach works but no reading for speed. Have a new Dakota and Doc Esc. Guess I'll have to check my connections and make sure all is good.

Glad you got it figured out. My speedo does that ocassionally as well. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesnt. Think the speedo is bad internally as I rewired whole bike and still ocassionally does it.

He said he has a Dakota speedo not stock , so maybe check and clean the speedo sensor. Then check wiring from module to the speedo plug for continiuty. You can check if the speedo sensor is working by taking the bike for a ride and see if the turn signals self cancel or not.

Thanks for all the help. I have a tendency to overdo it on the cleaning so it is possible that I unplugged something
