problems after jump start

Hey guys, and gals... Got some strang happenings! Never had any trouble from my bike. It is an 07 k-9... My dumb@$$ left the ignition switch on at a stop on a ride... Tried to roll start it! That was a fun way to give out of breath and slide the back tire! So we jump started it with a police car that was there(different story)... Well soon after trouble began. Cuts off on take off after stops... and now you have to switch it on and off several times before it will come on? I called a not real local big dog parts dealer thinking it was the ignition switch. He laughed and said i had much bigger problems??? He said its the computer... It always is! I have read lots of these post but none seem exactly what i got... Any help? Thanks Joey

From what I understand and have been told its never a good idea to jump start your bike from a car, specially if its running (car). You may have fried something.

hey chopper joe,was the car runnin when it jump you?no god as was said,also could just be your battery since it went dead.if the battery is low the ehc will do some strange chit,charge your battery and have it load tested,how pld is the battery?mobsta joe

oh one other thing you can try s disconect your battery,this will reset the ehc,i think

Yeah... the car was running! Bad Bad!!! But I am gonna try taking it out and putting it on the big charger... A local guy told me taking it loose might help reset the EHC... So hopefully???? As far as the age of the battery, its never been replaced! But it has always done fine... But I will load test it while its out! Thanks for the input!

Next time you push start it try 4th or 5th gear it is much easier to get the back tire to turn to motor over than 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and as you let the clutch out hit the started button at the same time and barooooommmmm there she goes. :2thumbs: Jump Start fried your EHC IMO, so get ready to spend big bucks or time to change over to the Wire Plus System. Sorry but that is what it looks like to me.

What little boo said! U need to use a higher gear when pushing to start. Good luck. Let us know the outcome. Hope u didn't fry the ehc.

Coming from me(not too much)you may have done some damage,but try,like you said,and take the battery out and charging it,probly won't help too much so your better off buying a new batt.but at least if you disconnect the batt for 20min.(i think it is)it may reset the ECH and hopefully you'll be alright.Others know way more than me,but WTF

I am certainly no expert here; but why would jumping the bike with a car "fry' your ehc? Does the voltage regulator only protect the ignition? Why does one think that say a bit over 12V (maybe) would damage the ehc?

Like I said, I'm no electrical guru with these bikes but I can tell you I've jumped my K9 several times (once with a mobile condo - Skid calls it a class A...) and my wife's Coyote was jumped with a police car too. Didn't fry anything with my bikes for what its worth.

i am know guru either when it comes to electrical but i would guess the amperage is higher from a running car,just my thoughts,i have never jumped my bike with a car runnin or not so i wouldnt know,the gurus say dont so i dont,some of these guys know there chit,these ehc are very sensitive,like i said i dont know chit:roll::roll::loony:

Yea usually the car amps are higher and the ehc dosen't like this. Start with a new battery and rule that out before you deal with the ehc. You are gona have to replace it anyway, three years is about the life of these batteries. Alway if you're goning to jump start be sure the other vehicles motor is not running. But better not to jump start.

It was the EHC!!!

Well... It was in fact the EHC! The problem continued to get worse until the bike acted as if there was not even a battery in it! I replaced the EHC and it fired right off! So thanks for everyones ideas and knowledge... Do not jump your bike! It might not hurt anything... But it could cost you around 500 bucks!

Yep my buddy fried his car computer (PT Cruiser) that way too. Some newer vehicles and bikes you need to disconnect the jumpers before you try to start it. Let your battery charge with someone elses battery via jumper cables....... but disconnect the jumpers before you try to start up your ride.
