03 bulldog Rear fender(end) looks like has deep scratches in paint. Its actually cracked paint under the clear coat. Maintenance shop says its the flexing fiberglass, paint/cracks will just get worse. Was thinking of gettin it shaved down 3-4" to get rid of cracks, eliminate same problem in future........... Any trials/errors? Ideas?

lsmln,

I have an extensive experience and knowledge in all of the different fiberglass lay-up techniques. If you're showing cracks in your paint, then most likely you also have cracks in fiberglass itself and in the gel-coat outer shell materials. If you look closely, you can probably see wrinkles in the clear coat as well, if it not too old or too much movement. All of the above is most likely being caused by the excessive vibrations to the rear fiberglass fender, which are normal.

I'd really be surprised to learn that "rigid mount" fender was made from fiberglass, on anything, unless it was a 1/4" "Structural Hybrid Lay-up". And even then, I'd still say that was a pretty bad judgement call on someones part.

The problems you're experiencing "may" be able to be rectified. But not by just any 'ol auto body technician, with no offence intended to anyone. But to stop that kind of cracking it's going to take some special lay-up techniques and experience with thin material lay-ups, "if" it can be prevented in the future.

Without seeing the extent of the damage, I could possibly see the following scenario. The required repair materials are not real expensive, but along with the added labor cost, prior to re-painting, it might equal the cost of a new steel fender. So that means that before any re-painting, you need to make that decision on which way to go, steel or fiberglass.

PM me if I can help.

From this picture I'm not seeing the cracks just the water stains. I had the fiberglass fenders on my 03 and never had an issue and to my knowledge there hasn't been an issue with them at least on this forum.
If you want to replace it then your best bet would be shovelheadkicker on eBay. He is always selling them.

yeah, took this shot to show zero additional support. my bike guy says a fender this long usually has extra supports underneath....... i'll check out shovelhead, THX for the input

You won't see the cracks from the underside, that's just the exposed matte material on the underside.

Any cracks will only be visible from the painted and/or cleared reflective top side.

I agree with the addition of "support ribs" cris-crossing the underneath if there is room

heard about the benefits of the support, but also been told it cannot be applied to fiber.... any truth? startin to feel like i might have to bite the bullet and get a new fender, paint, etc. there should be 5 total pic angles.

I was having somewhat the same problem with my rear fender. It was "spider web cracking" around the mount holes for the strut. I sent it in to BD with hopes to have it repainted. Well they said it would be cheaper and easier to just to replace the fender with new and repaint from there. With paint and new fender it was about 550.00. I forgot to mention this tid-bit....my fender had 3 mount holes for the license plate which i wanted filled so I could go with a side plate mount. I believe part of the reason with going with the new fender was the reduction in price to having to fill the holes and smooth them out. So if you can I would go with a replacement fender that was steel. Just my 2 cents thou.
