primary vent?

I have been reading post about a primary vent , where is the vent and can it be checked without removing to primary cover.

I have a leak I have been trying to fix its dripping at the drain plug , I originally thought it was leaking there and seeing how my cover was scratched up I bought another one off ebay and also a new gasket and used rtv on the inner primary mostly to hold th gasket in place while I put the new cover on. I thought that would stop the leak but no after riding for a couple hours theres the drip again.

I have been reading post on here and some saying if the vent was pluged it could cause a leak?

I been messin with this for sometime now any ideas? Im ready to just let it leak.:angry:

The vent is on the 05 and new Baker primary

you may or may not have one since you have an '04 but on the top back edge of the primary about center, (accessible from the outside) you will see a hex bolt with a screen in it. if not, it will be incorporated in the inspection plate.

I guess I dont have one then but any ideas on the leak, doubt I over filled it just put in 32 oz

Can you isolate the leak? Could be that the RTV is the problem

NOT SURE WHERE IT IS COMING FROM, THOUGHT IT WAS THE DRAIN PLUG AT FIRST BUT DOUBT IT IS , NEW COVER WITH A NEW PLUG WHITH YELLOW TEFLON TAPE ON IT BUT THE LEAK MUST BE CLOSE TO THE PLUG BECAUSE IT DRIPS OFF THE PLUG , I WILL TIGHTEN THE BOLTS DOWN AGAIN AND HOPEFULLY IT WILL STOP BECAUSE I REALLY DONT WANT TO TAKE IT APART AGAIN ,LOL

happens sometimes, the o-ring will get a little crossed when putting the outer primary back on and it will get cut when tightening it up, causing a leak.

iF YOU MEAN THE O RING ON THE DRAIN PLUG THERE IS NONE ITS A PIPE THREAD FITTING AND JUST FOR AN EXTRA i PUT THE YELLOW TEFLON ON THE FITTING PLUG BUT IT DOES SEAM TO BE COMING FROM THE DRAIN i JUST CANT BELIEVE IT IS STILL LEAKING AFTER ALL THE EFFORT I PUT INTO IT,LOL

IT LEAVES A SPOT ABOUT THE SIZE OF A HALF DOLLAR ONCE YOU PARK IT AFTER THE MOTOR IIS HOT , THEN IT STOPS , IT DOESNT LEAK COLD ,GO FIGURE.

no, i'm talking about the big o-ring gasket that fits into the groove in the outer primary half that presses against the inner primary half. it is about 1/8" square and a big circle.

My 04 Mastiff just started to leak some. No drips after sitting, just making a mess towards rear after riding. Seems to be ahead & above the drain plug, but accumulates @ the drain plug so the first thing you think is drain plug, but it is not.

I haven't found any vent anywhere, might have to get the ole drill out & make one.

On my 04 Bulldog I had to drill small hole in backside of Primary to stop this Leak New Gaskets seals still leaked drilled the hole installed a brass fitting and 3/16 vent hose up by barrery box no more leaks, Good luck

I just tightened the bolts a little more and it looks like the leak might be just behind the drain plug and like you said it drips off the plug so thats what I thought it was at first but guess not,lol

I will see what happens when it stops rainning in a couple days and see if it still leaks and if it does I will consider drilling a vent hole .

I think someone mentioned that some models have a vent hole in the inspection plate, is that true and can I install one there ?

i think if i had to do it i would go with the top back to not damage the chrome on the front. the inspection plate is weak enough as it is, too, without putting holes in it. the one i was talking about had a groove cut in the back side of it.

There is a chrome cover on the tranny and in the back of that cover on the primary side there is a hex head with a rubber hose coming off it lying on the primary with an open end, is that a vent . I figured it might be the compression release?

Sorry obviously not a tech but thanks to this site and all the advise you people give I am learning.

if it is laying on the primary, you may want to get a longer piece of hose and run it to the bottom of the frame, maybe a little longer, to get rid of the leaking onto the primary.

I believe that is the transmission vent.

Yes that is a vent. but it sounds like it is the transmission vent.

FWIW

I have read on HDForum that the harleys vent their primary around the clutch push rod & into the transmission.
Now maybe that's how the pre 2005 Dogs were suppose to vent? I dunno.Venting the primary on its own seems a better way to go.

That is the trans. vent. The primary vent is behind the inner primary, at the top of the primary, in the middle of the primary. I just finished replacing mainshaft seal, and several o-ring gaskets. I found the primary vent and it was stopped up tight. I blew compressed air thru it, stuck a piece of wire in it and cleaned it with solvent. Seems like it takes a ride or so for some of the bolts to seat properly. After each ride I've checked for leaks and retightened all allen bolts. Some were loose, others weren't.

You said you put on a new cover and you have a leak? Did you check the new cover for straightness? Lay a straight edge across the edge and make sure its flat. I had a brand new cover that had lips near several bolt holes. Filed them flat put on a new gasket and no leaks. Just my two cents..
