primary pushing out screen

Transmission oil has no way of entering center of Main shaft on the DSSC transmission like you would a standard H-D style.
Numbers to case can be found on right side just behind the Pulley cover, between the chrome bearing door and chrome top cover.
Still confused with you telling the oil is on drive belt side, but you feel it's primary oil? No way for primary oil to get on right hand side unless bike is leaning towards the right and it runs along bottom of frame.

Understood. No doubt I need to see a parts blowout of this engine family. How close am I then if the crank seal is inside the primary like a h-d?

The beauty of the net is to throw darts at it.

Either I have blowby which should be black, lose oil in the bag, fill the pri with more oil...
... Or my tranny is low since the last time I checked.

Only her hairdresser knows for sure.

bigdog, when you receive transmissions as per, do some transmissions have a gray residue and that oil is detectible as gray? Or does the oil stay clean and the degrading whatever, bearing gall, tooth decay, shaft break, fork burn, are we still the same color once we pop the trans apart and gray is hardly ever the color?

ok, now I will sound real dumb, but it is what it is. When I was checking the transmission fluid I was bothered that the fluid was so clear it was hard to tell if it was there or not. So I used my fingers to rub the area between the marks and got fluid on my fingers when I did so I assumed the fluid was good.

Tonight I decided to be more sure and drained the transmission fluid. I did not crank the bike and get it warm so I did not get all of it, but most of it and I got less than 8 ounces. This means my tranny is low on fluid.

With this I am leaning toward the transmission as Andrew suggested. Is there anyway to know for sure? Can I take the primary cover off and inspect anything?

The transmission says BigDog Baker 6 speed and the number is 0075026.

Transmission was built in 2005, so it most likely had the old main shaft and should be updated along with the rebuild. It's safe to say you have fluid transfer going on between the transmission and primary through the main seal...most likely caused from bad bearings. You can remove primary outer cover and then the primary chain assembly with clutch assembly, then check for any play on the main shaft. If any play at all up and down, in and out, you need a rebuild.
If no play found and bearings feel ok while turning shaft, you may be able to just replace the main seal and put primary back together. However, if you find you have the old main shaft, I would advice getting it replaced sooner than later.

Andrew, could the primary oil follow the clutch push rod thru the tranny main shaft and be leaking out the back of the clutch cable ramps? There is a small seal on the back of the clutch ramps. Just a thought:confused:

Thank you for all your help. I am out of town this week, but this weekend I will remove the primary, chain and clutch. I have never done this on a bike before and been a good 20 years since I replace a transmission in a car.

I do see sticky's on the forum to remove the primary and clutch. Should I watch out for any gotcha's?

Amdrew, I will send a pic of the shaft once I have the primary off, if you do not mind that is. I will not know if my tranny has the old or new shaft.

When you oh back together add an open Primary to your list of parts

Plugging off the primary vent will pressurize the primary and it will force oil out anywhere it can. The proper fix is to get the smaller diameter clutch push rod so the primary can breath through the mainshaft then you can plug off the vent on the primary. I believe you can get that push rod from Baker.

primary vent has been plugged since day one explain why 9 years of riding
Some of the early models were vented through the inspection cover and later they changed to the screen in the back of the primary. I don't think either version worked very well.

I'm not trying to hi jack thread but my inspection cover has a gasket no way will this leak past the inspection plate gasket. I guess if your running hard and long ride it might build pressure in the primary. Do what Andrew said can't go wrong

The updated clutch pushrod has nothing to do with venting. They made OD smaller so it would not rub on the inside of the main shaft and create unwanted noise.
Typically the primary will vent from a small hole on inner primary near starter. BDM added the extra vent in hopes to eliminate excessive pressure building up inside...if you need a new vent, I have some.

I was going to pull the clutch off today and the tranny to send to Andrew and I thought there was a thread that showed how to remove the transmission. Did I miss it? Does it exist? The manual is useless for this sort of thing.

I learned something new, as I drained the primary I found I had 2 quarts of oil in it. THis was likely because I could see oil pooring out when riding and the shifting got worse, so I added more. Assuming it was all primary fluid. Of course after training the tranny, it had to be transmission oil since I was down to 8 ounces.

I am about to pull the primary cover off and see how to take the clutch plates off.

The Primary takes 1 quart only!!! or.... am I missing something here?

Nope, you are correct, I was riding and watching fluid poor on the ground. Then downshifting became difficult so I added primary since the fuild on the ground looked like primary. The first time I added some, it very well needed it. I added some more because I had a ton of fluid on the ground. Between those 2 adds, I ended up with way to much. Hard to tell how much primary you have by looking through the primary cover.

Sorry everyone, I am finally trying to put it back together today. Only problem is I am taking it very slow. Sad part is first problem is the oring clutch to transmission, I cannot remember is just went over the shaft or is I need to push it up on something between the bearings and the main shaft seal. As soon as I figure that out, hopefully most of the rest will go smoothly.
