It is about half way between the 2 marks, It was full when I changed it last summer...
Trans problem if now low. Look in the back, under the side, at the top, keep looking at that gearbox for numbers.
the bike would not shift down gears. Well it would sometimes, but not everytime. I could help it by down shifting as I went down in speed, but not as I came to a stop.
Between being gray in color, sounds like something is being chewed up in a fine powder. You have tech01 questioning the trans case number and year so you may need to tear down that primary side, flex the clutch basket up and down and if that is wobbly, send the trans off to bigdog.
Now, there is another problem that may be hidden you do not see. Say the disintegration of the trans flowed thru the push rod and into the primary. Say this brass or whatever metal is being ground into powder, this enters into the rollers of the primary chain. It could eat that support roller bearing so the basket goes up and down, meaning, is the snowball effect taking out part after part. Say the primary cover is off, you swab a finger on the bottom of the outer or inner primary, take a magnifier or a kid's microscope, see if you can tell if it's shinny like metal and looks like metal shavings. That now eats the primary chain inside and this causes a snowball effect of the gray matter. Toss the chain if metal is transferred from trans to primary.
Note the up and down movement of the rollers against the sprocket teeth. If that gray eats into that crush of the rollers, that tooth gap is going to show more wear, become wider; will cause a high spot with a new chain, rather than change it out via 3 parts like a new chain/FF/RR sprockets = 3. So with that much possible wear, the change out is clutch basket-pri chain-compensator sprocket = 3. It all depends on what gray means and if that means metal in my book...
