Primary oil

How do you tell how much primary oil is in your primary case without taking the primary case off?
Is there a way to check the level through the inspection cover?

OK pknowles. I did that . Thank you. Then I took a piece of sheet metal and cut a 3/8" by 6" strip out of it and made a dipstick. I slid it down to the bottom of the Primary case thru the open inspection cover hole. I had 1" of primary fluid on the home made dipstick. The reason I did this is because I am having problems with the primary fluid blowing and leaking out. I was way out on a lonely desert Hwy and I started hearing a slight grinding noise so I pulled over and took the inspection cover off and tried to see how much oil was in my primary. I couldn't see any oil. So now if it ever happens again I will have my dipstick with me. :)

If you are worried about it, drain it and put about 20 ounces back in. The manual calls for 32 ounces but is way too much. Several good threads on oil in general. Do a quick search and enjoy the read.
This is actually based on the year of the bike. My 2000 Vintage Sport takes 32oz in primary. My 2004 takes none. I think the 20 oz. is for the RSD bikes. ‘05 & ^. Same thing with the vent.

I altered my vent. I have a braided stainless steel tube going from vent hole up thru battery compartment and out the side of the frame. I've always had a oil leak and from what I just realized from all you guys input is I have been putting the whole 32 oz.'s into it. That must be the reason I've always has an oil leak problem. I'll try the 20 oz. Thanks to all who took time to reply.

No primary fluid in your 04? I had an 03 that used primary fluid…

Do you happen to have a photo of the vent alteration you made? Thx!
