inspection cover started seaping small amount of fluid. the other morning fired it up, let it get good and warm and fluid started running out. took inspection cover off and the ears were broke off of the gasket. new gasket on the way. is there a secret when installing new gasket so no more problems arise. thanks, scholiak

I used the Permatex sealant....they make a gray sealant that is resisitant to extreme heat and vibration and no problems so far..good luck

I used the old gasket for a pattern and bought gasket material and made my own (.032") Chacha is right about the torque. They strip very easy.

Yep the trick is to use a thin film of sealant on the metal surfaces especially around the bolt holes. I always use Hylomar M - that shit rocks and it is way better than permatex. yep it costs more but you also use less of it. I usually get the 2.7 oz tube from silver-seal.com. The Hylomar brand of blue medium viscosity threadlocker is effing awesome as well (Hylomar 4430 Blue) . best medium strength threadlocker I've used.

Product info / Hylomar Website: Hylomar M

Only go hand tight, then just a little bit more! Those inspection covers are notoriously known for cracking around the bolt hole. Been there done that!

permatex gray! I rebuild rear diffs, seal and install the rear cover and pour in the fluid. never had one leak yet! I use on both dogs

I cracked a corner at 108 inch lbs once so I don't go over 80 inch lbs any more. That is enough to prevent leaks. I check it when I see a seepage over the next 2,500 miles which is enough to snug it up and stop the seepage. I also use the permatex which is important so you don't have to use much torque and risk breaking an inspection cover corner. The torque in the service manual is too much. You may get lucky at that torque but I don't recommend taking the chance and throwing away money at inspection covers.

I've always used silicone between gasket n primary cover and left it sit for a day, but I have always tightened in a X cross pattern to half torque and the again in X pattern to recomended torque 108 in/lbs. I did pick up a spare from one of Eddie Trotta's boys that is much thicker for this reason but have not had to use it yet.
