Primary fluid question

I changed the fluid in my primary and my clutch started slipping in fifth and sixth gear if you get on it. When this started I took the primary cover off, made sure the clutch basket nut was still tight, and put 20/50 weight in the primary but it is still slipping like it did before. When I put this fluid in I started noticing a little bit of fluid on the bottom of the primary case like it was too thin and seeps out. Is there a different weight that would help either of these problems. It didn't slip till I changed the fluid but I am not sure what was in there in the first place.

the 20/50 should be fine.. I'd check the clutch adjustment after tightening the clutch nut...

Did you put a new primary gasket on? You need to if you didn't. Make sure you put some teflon tape on the threads of your drain plug. (I use the liquid type) 20/50 is fine. Go back and adjust your clutch to spec. The procedure is in the forum, real easy, do a search.

I do not have cable adjustment because I have custon controls called Climax Controls and it is hydraulic half the run then it changes over at a slave cylinder. I adjusted as best as I could at the adjustment nut behind the exaughst but didn't do any good. It trys to pull a little at the red lights though.

Sounds odd to me (but what do I know). I would expect slippage to be most pronounced in lowest gears.

Did you use a full synthetic oil in the primary? If you did it can cause slippage. I use the std Harley primary oil.

A lot of us use a lot of different fluids in our Dogs. I use what is recommended by Baker, ATF fluid. Nothing special, just a name brand ATF and have had no issues. Like Bro1 mentioned, some have had issues with synthetics in the primary but others use it without issues. If you had no issues until you changed fluids, then I would start there and change to something other than what you are using. See if that works and if not, then I would look at your hydraulic controls. Not familiar with those or how to adjust.

I'm using ATF with no issues. Type of oil in the primary is less important than the others - really there just to lube the chain and cool the clutch. By the way, slippage is likely to be more pronounced in HIGHER gears, not lower gears. There is a greater load in the higher gears.
