Powder coating rims and hubs?

When you powder coat the rims and hubs, should they be done separate or should I attach the hubs to the rims before giving them to the shop?
I figured to have them separate to make it easier to clean them first.
I have already removed the bearings from the hubs in any case due to the heating process.

when I had mine done they took the hubs off and did separately - if you did them together they would become one part - a bit messy if you ever needed to get the hubs off later

not well...bike is being picked up tonight - must be the third time in as many months. If I get a trailor I reckon it will have paid for itself by the time summer gets here!

Neil, they will have to be seperate. If you did them together (and the shop most likely wouldn't do it anyway) you would end up sealing them together. Then 10,000 miles from now when you need to change bearings you would be screwed! Better to just tape off the surfaces and do it all seperate.

Yep what they said. My powder coater said he does them all the time and never had an issue but what he does is completely powdercoat the wheel (no masking) but he does mask off the ID of the wheel and the ID and face of the hubs.

Lee sorry to hear about any woes you are having. I know you have done so much. Hope there is a rainbow at the end...

I looked at some Gloss Black and Mirror Black seeing how the scoot is black. I was told it would shine as good as the mono black paint on the side cover I brought with me. I will do a AC/DC theme on it sometime but the base will stay black.
I did not ask the other day but is there any chrome like powder coating material on the market?

I have everything separated and the tires are being dismounted from the rims and will be ready to pick up tomorrow.

Neil I have seen some of the new metallic chrome powders that look pretty good but powder coating clear over polished aluminum looked better to me. The guy I used says he only uses the colored chrome powder on raw steel to give it that chrome look. Those powders have to be cleared over as well because they are not as durable as the other pigments.

I will talk to them tomorrow or Friday anyway. I have to pick the rims up today from having them dismounted and I am not sure if they will be open still when I get there after that but we will see.

be careful with the clear coat powder - some of the stuff can go yellow over time

I am going with the Gloss Black powder coating. Seen a headlight bucket done in it today and it looked great......
Kinda like Al Hall scoot. Stuff just looks really good..
No need to polish, just dust it off or wash it and it comes back with a shine..
Just what I need.

They quoted me $275 to do both rims and the hubs on each one.The headlight bucket and the rear pulley guard...

That was not a special price me that I know off, everyday price. She has a towing business, powder coating business and then bought this one powder coating out too. Got a Grand National in the shop and she is most smoking hot to boot. :2thumbs:

That's a great price I had mine shot twice, color then clear which costs a little more but I paid $300 just for the wheels and hubs plus another $68 for a 2lb. minimum custom color order. That wasn't a big deal though because I ended up adding some items to use the whole 2 lbs. of powder.

From when I talked to John, he said they shoot them twice anyway. Did not really get into the details seeing how I know squat about it. I have no doubt they will take care of me.
Whenever it is finished I will post some pics. Hope it looks as good as Al's.
