Pops out of 3rd and into 2nd under hard acceleration

Is this something common? I have had this happen before, but tonight it was repeatable. Hard acceleration all the way to 3rd only to have it drop out of third back into 2nd and hit the rev limiter.

Anyone at all heard of this? 2009 Mastiff, carb rejetted, have the Bandit clutch, V&H 2-1 with comp baffle and S&S aircleaner (no internal mods to engine). Engine is VERY strong so...

I found the thread on this. I does seem like a good possibility. I just hope it's nothing serious. 2 weeks till warranty runs out (18500 miles so far)

I checked the shifter pawl back and forth movement while in 3rd and shift linkage disconnected. It felt fine didn't require any adjustment (nice strong spring tension and moved the same distance both directions). I lengthened the shift rod so I can get a little more leverage into the shift, but I don't think this is the answer either.

I have the bike jacked up in the air to do this check and was shifting the gears by hand. The 2nd-3rd shift doesn't have the same satisfying "clunk" feel as the shifts into other gears do, in fact, I had to rotate the tire slightly (back and forth) to make sure it was dropping all the way into 3rd.

Any other thoughts?

I changed the trans lube today to Amsoil Severe 75w-90 (not why I bought the lighter oil, but I did). Old lube looked fine and level was fine. Will let you guys know if there is any difference in my shift problem.

p.s. I have noticed that since I switched to Amsoil in the engine, it uses more oil.

RE Check the clutch adjustment. Pressure plate nuts sounds like they could be turned another click tighter and make sure they're even.

cracked tooth, not likely, no transmission noises and the fluid was free of metal.

adjust clutch? why? not slipping and since I put the Bandit Bruiser in it 15,000 miles ago, no problem with dragging or release or engagement. Had recently changed the primary fluid and it was clean as well, nothing on the magnet either. (I had Iron Lightning put the clutch and associated parts on after it ate the 3rd stock clutch).

After riding it around this afternoon my adjustment to the shift linkage along with Amsoil in the tranny, it felt like smoother shifts, generally better feeling (but I also didn't really hammer it).

Get a flashlight and look down where the linkage ties to the tranny.Should be a pawl there too.
The reason I mention the clutch is it just sounds like your not getting it into gear good. i mean the thing will shift without a clutch but it sounds like its jumping out which means your not getting a good clean shift. Also think about the very last work you did to in relation to shifting. That could have been that new clutch.

Clutch has been in for about 15,000 miles. I plan on taking it into Iron Lightning probably wednesday. If they will be decent about things, they will look at it closely. I am going to ride it all day tomorrow, so I will be able to see if my shifter adjustment and different transmission lube helped. My first impression after putting the Amsoil gear oil in it was that it was shifting smoother in all gears, but that was probably just wishful thinking.

What worried me were the horror stories told on here about transmission troubles. And I distinctly remember reading on here that the transmission is running about at the max loads for it's design. So I wouldn't be suprised if some hard runs wouldn't eventually break it.

mine did the same was bent shift fork good thing still had warranty
When I had the shift linkage disconnected to check the pawl adjustment, I wasn't able to get it to "clunk" into 3rd (by hand) like all the other gears do. I had to rock the rear back and forth a little (jacked up in air of course) to get it to fully engage. Did you have a symptom like this or what symptom did you notice?

Sounds like you have two weeks to destroy it before it's out of warrenty. Winters coming on anyway. Good luck with Iron Lightning.

Just got word from Iron Lightning. They claim the shifter pawl needed adjustment. They say it's now fixed. (covered under warranty). Also the new speedo came in and they put it in, so when it rains, it pours!

Richard have you had any problems with your fuel tank liner coming apart yet? I put some braided line on mine yesterday along with a new valve and when I pulled the old valve out I had some weird looking flakey crap stuck to the screen. Have you had your valve out to look at the screen? Your bikes been in service longer that mine you may want to check it out while it's at the shop.

I have not had any tank liner problems that I know of, but on the other hand, most of the problems are on bikes that sit a lot. I usually fill mine up 2 twice a week, more if the weather is nice. It was in on the 20,000 mile service and no issues other than the pawl adjustment and regular service stuff. (I have seen pretty far down in my tank recently and it looks clean.)
