Popping on decel and shifting

Hello all,

My bike pops on decel and shifting. I am running shorty exhausts and a 33 jet. Weve sealed and checked the intake and exhaust. Its speculated maybe the pipes are too short and air is getting sucked in. Or maybe the timing is off a smidge. Power delivery is great and it runs perfectly. Just pops on decel and upshifting.

Any advice is appreciated.

Short pipes will contribute. Might also try opening up the mixture screw a bit. Mines has it but not enough to annoy me just everybody else

Stock Pipes backfire but you don't notice as much with the baffles. It is more pronounced with after market pipes and some adjustments can minimize the backfiring.

Thank you all for your input. Some guy told me that the 10% ethanol gas would cause it too. Even said that the ethanol is corosive and will eventually cause damage to the seals and other parts of the fuel system. What yall think? Any validity to his comment?

We R&R the 33 jet down to a 31 and cleaned the air filter today. Bike runs smoother and doesnt pop when upshifting, but still gurgles, farts and weezes on decel.

I have used both ethanol and non-ethanol gas. If you use ethanol and don't use it up (or don't treat it) with daily or weekly riding, I can see it will drive you crazy. I notice it mostly in my lawn mower when it sits a long time. It will run like sh&t if it runs at all. My wife's bike will act the same way when not run in a month. So, I'll ride her bike to work and put fresh gas in her.

A properly tuned S&S engine will give you a decel pop. Lots of posts on this one. You can un tune the engine and run it a little fat to stop the pop. My question is why would you want to....? Let em hear ya coming!!:zz2cents:

I agree. My bike runs STRONG but has decel pop. I am not messing with it plus I kind of like the sound myself.

i thought it was just me who liked the pop on decel. my club makes me ride on the right to avoid it. question, the screw opens left or right? left richer, right leaner? i took the back end of the stock pipes off and added new tips to the ends of the top half. trying to post pic now.

Counterclockwise to richen ..... remember that the adjustment screw is for metering the fuel, rich/lean for the idle metering circut .... once you accelerate from an idle the main get takes over...

popping pipes

I have these Martin Brother Madusa's on my Chopper and they have always popped on decel. Strokers set the jetting on the bike once I installed the pipes.
