Poor Performance!!!

I've been riding since I was 8, street bikes since 16, I'm now 41. Most of my street bikes have been Honda. My last being an 02 VTX 1800c. I recently traded it in for a beautiful 08 Mastiff Limited Ed. Beautiful bike! My question is; (and I'm being serious and not trying to offend) why the hell doesn't this bike have ANY balls? Performance wise I feel like I'm on a little Yamaha V-star 650, IT SUCKS. I'm waiting for my new pipes to come in (Hookers) and they'll rejet the carb, etc... but I can't see the performance jumping up that much with only that done. They claim 0 - 60 in 3.9, but I think they mean minutes, not seconds. Please give me some encouraging words. When you buy an almost 30k bike, you expect a degree of performance without having to put in another 5k.

Thanks,
ej

is the clutch solid or is it slipping??????????????
check your air filter/carb intake to make sure it is not restricted.
check plugs for good hot spark.
plugged up exhaust.

DO AN INTRO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Break in the motor

Break the motor in properly. keep RPMs down in the first 500 is key. 500-2500 is also important. Read the break in rules in the manual. This motor is a bat outta hell after broken in. First 500 , weak, 500-100 more power. i am at 1250 and it only gets quicker. To make the most power out of a motor break it in proper

WOW, why didn't you test ride it before you bought it :bang: Break it in first as advised by 1extremeskier , if by then its still not what you want, start with a few modes, like the Exhaust, XXX Carb, Cam and Ignition, Especially the ignition. These mods will not cost you 5K, but they will make the dog haul ass for sure. Good Luck

I'll do an intro soon... I'm at work (only time I have to write). Like I said though, I've ridden my entire life. In the first week I had 690 miles on it, by the end of the 2nd week there were over 1200 (yes, had them do the break-in tune-up). Last week was in upper 30's in the morning when I leave for work so I didn't ride to work. So it still only has about 1400 miles on it (3rd week). Torque is EXTREMELY low compared to the old vtx, (I know it's a different kind of ride... single pin vs. dual pin, etc). My cousin has a 1200 custom that feels more torquey. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the bike. That's why I traded in. When I lived in Hawaii I was a member of the Minotaur's M/C and about 16 of my brothers ran BD's, I loved the bikes then (and that's when they had some problems), and I still love them now. Just want a little more "umph" . I have a set of Hooker Darkside Troublemakers that will (hopefully) get installed this week, along with re-jetting and a general tuneup.

I Live in the Tampa area... hope to meet some of you around soon.

Welcome - it not all bad - The good news is you can train the dog to your liking    Just don't rush it, nice and easy with the first couple of miles (which I see you have already done). Couple of great suggestions already and some order of priority -
  • XXX Carb:up:
  • Nice BIG Sucking Airfilter:up:
  • Exhaust and jet accordingly.
  • A 4" open primary will help

That should be a good start, if not we have the delux selection - super sized package :2thumbs: :2thumbs:
  • Cam:2thumbs: :2thumbs:
  • Deck jugs:2thumbs: :2thumbs:
  • port heads:2thumbs: :2thumbs:

That should do it for you...

Mine fuckin' rips.
Super G sent to Zippers and Thunder Jet installed, venturi bored, bowl vents drilled, 600 cam, Wimmer 90 deg with a HPF3 filter mounted vertically for my intake, Doug Keim MMF Bad Ass exhaust. Fastest thing I have ridden except for my GSXR. Two different worlds though. The GSXR was like riding a formula 1 car, my K9, a top fuel dragster.

It may be slower than a Honda now, but it has 10 times more class. It has more class than that honda if it didn't run at all, Actually, that Big Dog has more class with you pushing it!!! :2thumbs:

I still have a VTX 1800 and it is nowhere near as fast or powerful as my dog! The dog is putting out more than 125 Hp.
