Just checking to see if any members on here installed the new Perfomance machine supergas air filter. The breather bolts supplied are to big for the heads to secure the backing plate. PM aplogized and didn't have the required bolts but said I need to re-tapp my heads to make it fit. Does anyone here think that is a right thing to do??? and would they recommed this?? Thanks

not sure what you need to mount it... I wouldnt drill & retap my heads for a air cleaner..can you just use different hardware? I got a box full of hardware over the yrs that air cleaners would come with for several different applications...( I.E.) a filter may come with different mounting hardware set ups for different engines... if you know what you need I'll look & see if I got anything that may work ,if so its yours..

Doesn't sound right. The 117 doesn't breath through the mounting plate bolts. it breaths throught the line coming out of the rear head with the check valve and a small line coming out of the front head. Sounds like you just need to pick up some chrome 5/16" NC bolts of the correct length and spacers as well. The line vent line out of the head still needs to be maintained with the check valve and you can run it down and out of the way kinda like the carb bowl vent line. Just make sure you don't get the check valve reversed. Some folks have use a pc of braided fuel line for a cleaner look instead of the black vent line. I believe the vent line is 3/8"

I had to do something similar on my bike because of a spacer plate I made. Just got to longer bracket bolts and I had to use 1" spacers with a couple of shims. :hi:

thanks for the info guys. Yes, i am a bit leary to drill out larger holes on my heads. The bolts that mount the backing plates are vented, so i just can't throw any bolt in there. I will send back to pm ( which they said they would be happy to take back because they did not have the correct size breather bolts)

Kinda odd they dont have the correct size bolts, I cant tell ya how many Ive thrown out that size that were vented. Your motor doesnt breath through those bolts if their telling you that they do, any bolt will work. Your 117 breathes through the tubes on the heads so you dont need vented bolts.

So if i hear you tech guys correctly, I can use a regular 5/16 bolt without it being a breather bolt. Great, going to buy a couple now the right length. thanks guys

Yes your bike with the 117 does not breath thru the bolts.

111,117 and 124 cu in use a twin cam style head

107 and 113 cu in use evo style head with the breather bolts.

The bolts that are in there now should not be breather bolts unless somebody before you messed with the engine.

You are correct V. There were breather bolts in there from a D&M spike that i aquired with the bike!!!. Thanks

Isn't it weird that this is not common knowledge? I got a stock air filter for free from another member and while attempting to mount it I realize there are all different kinda bolts to mount the bracket. Well, I was heading to Daytona for Bikeweek and figured I'll ask somebody there as well as taking a look at other bikes. Well, funny enough I found a lot of show bikes with funky looking egg breathers, crossover tubes, and what not on motors that needed to breathing there at all. Thanks again to those that contribute real knowledge to this forum and helping me making my BDM even better.

I know it's an old thread but that doesn't make it non current !
