Please help wierd electrical issue!

Ok tried everything that was suggested. Checked wires under tank looked for loose grounds in battery area, checked wires under fender, and I still have the same issue. At this point I am going to throw in the towel and take it in and let someone look at it.

If you still have the tank off try unconnecting the Deutche connector that runs your handlebar controls, same as I suggested for the rear fender tail lights. Do the same for the headlight, and blinkers. Do them one by one replacing them back as you rule them out, turn key and see if the power LED lights up.

If any of them are unplugged and the POWER LED turns off then you have a BINGO!


If you end up taking it in - PLEASE post the result in this thread.

Tried unplugging the conectors one by one for handcontrols, headlight, etc, and nothing changed yellow light on the EHC still remained lit. I am going to drop off bike to get it checked out on Monday but it won't get worked on for a couple of weeks, so I will post results when I find out the verdict. Thanks for all the replies.

Hope your making headway on yours. My 2000 bulldog had all lights functioning but no start. Went throught all connections and anything appearing to be sketchy was cleaned up. Mine has a start module mounted on the battery with LED. That LED isn't lit but now no headlight or turn signals or start. Grrrr. Light on ecu lights up red momentarily. Its always something electrical on this bike. Big dog factory is zero help and dealer is 200 miles away. If I find a solution Ill let you know.

I am just puzzled volt meter shows current going to head light, but headlight won't light...

Just to be clear you're saying your voltmeter is showing voltage not amperage (current) correct? Where are your meter leads when you're measuring this?

The reason nothing changed when you unplugged the headlight connector is because you apparently already had an open circuit to the headlight. That would explain the yellow light on the EHC and the headlight not coming on. Since power for the headlight comes directly from the EHC I would check for continuity from the EHC to the headlight connector in the bucket. Disconnect the EHC and the headlight and see what you get measuring from one to the other!

(NOTE: Your hand controls have nothing to do with this, they only switch between high and low beams...)

Firefighterjoe, did you fix your problem? I have a 2000 bulldog with similar issues and searched here for an answer. Local shop wants to replace ECU based on a phone call and not looking at the bike. Figured I could zero in on the issue with the forum's help.
