John Brown Troop Ship
Maybe too far north for you, but since you'll be east, go north a little bit and think about this one....
My buddy Arthur (history buff) and I went to Baltimore and went on a living history cruise on the (Liberty Tours) John Brown, a restored WWII transport ship last year. It is a re-creation of 1944, and the ship sailed around Chesapeake Bay. The experience was complete with live entertainment consisting of Andrews Sisters, Abbott & Costello, and of course all staff are in period uniforms, etc. Art and I are both vets, and both of our fathers went to the European Theater on this type of ship, so we wanted to see what they experienced.
I thought it might be too corny, but in truth I really enjoyed it and learned a lot. We were able to walk around the entire ship including the engine room, and there were interesting write-ups everywhere about how it was at that time. There was a Confederate Air Corps of restored vintage fighters and bombers available so they came and 'strafed' us....very cool to see those perfect old planes in action over the water. All the equipment was correct, and there were jeeps etc in the cargo holds.
Because it is a ship traveling around, you have to register ahead of time and be on the roster that's submitted to Homeland Security, so you can't walk off the street. It was a little pricey at $150 or so as I recall. If you are interested, just Google John Brown cruise and you'll have all the info you want. The are only about 3 cruises each summer (May, June, October). If you are a student of WWII, it's a chance of a lifetime to experience a bit of 'live' history. Lots of vets, and of course most honored were the few WWII vets who showed up that day.
