Pitbull- gas mileage/gas tank quantity?

Like a complete fing moron I ran out of gas again on my Pitbull this past Saturday and I’m scratching my head as to how that happened if the tank indeed holds 4.60 gallons.

I reset my trip meter every time I top up the bike. So, Saturday I look at my trip meter before I start my ride and it’s at 53miles- so subconsciously I told myself I have about another 15 miles at a minimum before I’ll need to get gas. Well, I get about a mile from my house and ran out of gas and coasted into an Arby’s. I turned the fuel valve to reserve and attempted to fire her back up 4-5 times unsuccessfully and the battery was getting low- and it was getting dark outside. It’s too low to get on a trailer I have even with a fairly long ramp and it was too close to call a wrecker, so I said F-it, and I pushed her home. I felt like a massive dipshit pushing that big ass beautiful bike home, LOL. It looked like I was stealing it but couldn’t ride it.

Once home I put her up on my lift and disconnected the fuel line from the petcock valve, turned it to the “on” position and nothing came out. Then, turned it to “reserve” and instantly got a healthy flow of gas coming out. I had plans that night and couldn’t mess with it any longer, but the next morning after sitting 8-10hrs with it still in the “reserve” position it fired right up- no hesitation at all. I have NO IDEA why it wouldn’t start the previous day given the exact scenario, but it wouldn’t. So, I added about a third of a gallon to the bike from a gas can I had in the garage and then headed to the local gas station where I expected to put 3-3.5gallons in it, minimum. It would only take 2.5 gallons!!

It says the reserve is 1/2 gallon of the 4.6 gal tank and I know for a fact that fuel wouldn’t flow to the carb in the ON position- so, for arguments sake its empty as can be.

Is the reserve more? Is my gas tank off spec, LOL!?? What gives? You guys ever had a similar experience?

I fill up every 100 miles or so to be safe, I think you could get 120-140 on a full tank. Something seems off if you ran out at 54 miles..

Pull the petcock and check for crap in the tank. Could be the liner pealing or just a dirty filter.

Also city driving will cut the mileage down quite a bit. I have noticed a pretty big difference when I am in the city verses the country roads.
