Got a warning ticket this morning from a local cop who said my pipes were too loud! They're Big Dog (SuperTrapp) slip-ons, fer crying out loud!!
The ticket reads "improper loud exhaust, violating section 12-602".

Of course he nailed me just as I was pulling into the new Harley dealership parking lot where I was headed for their grand opening party, following me in with his lights on and all...with everybody in the lot watching. Just as he handed me the ticket, about 6 Harleys rode in that I swear were ALL louder than my bike...what irony!

Maybe he just wanted to check out my bike? He did say it was nice and that he'd never seen a Big Dog before...whatever! :job:

Anyway, I think I'll have this ticket laminated and I think I'll keep my BDM slip-ons...now that they're officially "validated"!! :2thumbs:

:D Sees humor in this as well. I bet he was just wanting to check out your the scooter. I wear ear plugs with my half helmet so I'd have to have told him "Dude, you really think it is that loud ,,,{then, acting surprised} ,,, opps I have ear plugs in,, might be the reason it didn't seem loud to me!!!

I would have had to ask someone in the Harley crowd to take my and the police officers pictures together, the blue lights on and all. maybe even get the cuffs out!

Ray

I would have asked if he had a db meter to be sure. I'm sure you could get out of it if it was worth the time to go to court.

:( I would move away from Chicago:D My Triumph Pipes are much louder than my 2 into 1 Big Radius. Louder than any Harley pipes I've been around! I can't hear shit on a long Triumph ride even with ear plugs:2thumbs:

Thanks Tim, I agree.

Being a State Elevator Inspector, I know all about codes, laws, gauges, meters, measurements, etc, and was fully prepared to hit this cop with "let's see your decimeter; when was it last calibrated and by which institiution; what distance away were you when you checked my pipe noise and for how long a time frame; where's a copy of the local ordinance stating the specific/tolerable decibel parameter allowed; etc"....HAD it come to a real ($) ticket vs. a "warning":job:ticket.

As it turned out, it was entertainment & conversation for the Harley crowd, I got a nice little trophy (I'm getting this ticket laminated) and my pipes are now officially "bonifide"!  All is well! :)

Nuke, I agree...Phoenix here I come (within the next 2-3 years)!

I don't think cops pull you over for "loud pipes" out there! :loony:

Having been to a few AZ Bike Weeks, it's a whole different bike culture out there...MUCH different and MUCH BETTER than Chicago!
Plus there's a LOT more riding season out there (no 5 -6 months of winter and rainstorms in the spring/summer every other day)!! :yesnod:

K9,
I know all about getting hassled for "loud" exhaust. Out here in Cali, riding my dirtbike gets me checked all the time. Out here your exhaust is not allowed to be over 96db, even though the factory exhaust was engineered at no more than 99db - so I'm constantly getting checked due to my having a race exhaust with quiet insert, which barely gets me by.

Your right regarding Codes and techniques that are required. I'm a Fire Life Safety Systems Manager and know all that crap too; the main thing with exhaust noise is there are SAE/ANSI testing requirements, which outline the procedures. They have strict guidelines for testing, and must follow it. Here's the AMA link for the new rule change in California - http://www.motorcycle-usa.com/2/8064/Motorcycle-Article/AMA-on-New-California-Exhaust-Law.aspx - link provides details regarding SAE and ANSI requirements.

So for anyone that gets pulled over in the future, do your homework 'cause you could get out of it!!! Know your maximum allowable db level by law and challenge the bastards!!! I have yet to see a cop that carries a db meter!!!

Biggest question - what were you doing at a HD dealership??? Hope they had beer!!!!

Good reasoning however Leo's are now giving the modified exhaust trophy's instead of the too loud tickets. No bd meter needed...

Probably adding the ticket to meet his ticket quota for the quarter. I'd challenge it in court. Maybe the judge will reduce it to something less.:D

Ray -- just be careful with that thouhgt -- in most states its illegal to have ear plug in while driving and when you get that man in blue with no humor your looking at what is I believe in most states considered a moving violation.

Some law officers like to make assumptions. I use to have a pickup lifted with big tires and such. I have a pa state inspection Licens. When I would get pulled over, which was quite often. The officer would start with the too tall Bla Bla Bla. I would hand him my paperwork plus my pa inspection license and a tape measure. They never liked that. ;)
One time one still wrote me a ticket, he looked pretty foolish when I went to court.
You are right it's worth it just to have the story. Lol

You want to know why you got stopped? Because you ride something different. Not a cookie cutter Harley. Something that not everyone has. Your different. You ride a Chopper. Something most people wish they had but don't have the balls to own. Be proud of your warning. It shows that you are special.
