pillion pad

Just got my 08 pit delivered and took it out today for the first time. A little intimidating to say the least. Had a question about the pillion seat.
I've read a few posts on here about removal of the pillion pad and it seems as if it should just pop off. The suction cups on mine break away from the fender easy enough but it seems as if there are two tabs toward the front that are tucked up under the main seat. The tabs seem to be snapped to the fender....I think.
They dont seem to be coming off that easy and I dont want to damage the fender. Anybody know what I'm talking about or have advice?????

It's not the suction cups that are the problem. The pop right off.
The are two fairly sturdy metal tabs at the front of the pillion seat that are attached to the fender by snaps or bolts of some sort. I'm not sure if this is an alteration to prevent the pillion seat from flying off.........but I am tentative about forcing them off for fear of damaging the fender.

huh?

i believe you have to take the seat off to get to those bolts that are holding the pillion pad on.

Hey WHAT, Can you take off the seat and get better look at what's going on with the front of the pillion pad? Never heard of bolts holding on a pad. Let us know what you find.

Yes, those are bolts. I have the same bike and my solution was to remove the seat so you can access the bolts, unbolt and remove the pillion. Put the bolts back in without the seat so that way you can pop the pad back on without having to bolt it back on. The tabs will just rest on top of the bolts when you put back the pillion as not to damage the fender. This was my solution because I normally ride without the pillion pad and instead of two holes in my fender, the bolts are in there. I was thinking of putting spikes in place of the bolts, but because the seat has springs that would be bad.

Since I have not taken receipt of my bike until I get home from this deployment, I have a question. I have heard on some bikes that you should not have the pillion on without a passenger so you won’t lose it while riding. Am I to assume that on the 08 Pit, the pillion is bolted on and there is no chance of it flying off while on the road?

If it is bolted I would say the previous rumours you have heard dont obtain to this particular bike and its attachment of the pillion pad

Pitbull pillion pad requires that you take the 2 bolts from the foot of the tank out (opposite the shocks). This will allow you to rest the seat pan on the tank while you access the 2 chrome screws in the rear fender. you take out the 2 screws, and your seat should have been equipped with some rubber fittings and longer chrome screws, these screw down into the fender and suction cups hold down rear of the pad while the front tabs secure the front down. This does prevent sway of the pad and generally holds it much more secure but allows for easy on and off in about 5 minutes after you do it a couple of times. I have a 08 Pit and a redhead who rides it with me all the time.

My bro worked for Big Dog in the paint shop as an engineer. Always, always, use the 3M tape protector when using suction cups on your pillions. He rode a K9 prototype bike to Sturgis without them and his luggage strapped to the pillion. Silver dollar city right through the paint. thank god it wasn't a $5K job and just a prototype stealth paint job.

I guess the posting of the pictures didn't work. anyway I used rossolo's method. remove the forward seat pan bolts......rock the seat forward (put something over the tank for protection!). remove the pillion bolts and pad, rock the seat pan back and reinstall the bolts on the seat pan.

Ross.................one question. I couldn't get a good gauge of the depth of the bolts on the fender. Now that the tabs for the pillion are no longer there, the bolts on the fender will sit about an 1/8 of an inch deeper. Is there a clearance issue with the tire now?? I cant get a good look up under the fender.

thanks

Throw some washers in there and you will be fine. I tested it out and it worked. I did exactly what you are thinking and it did rub on the tire. I threw some extra washers in with the bolts and they don't rub anymore.

figured how to post.

the pillion pad on the 08 pitbull does have tabs that bolt to the fender. there are two that are tucked up under the solo seat.
pillion pad bolts.jpg
in order to access these you have to remove the bolts on the front part of the solo seat
forward pan seat bolts .jpg
once removed you can rock the seat forward.
rock the pan seat forward.jpg
place a towel or something on the tank so as not to scuff the paint. remove the bolts on the pillion seat and pull off. the bolts along with some suction cups hold the pillion in place
suction cups and tabs.jpg
once removed you can reinstall the bolts. be sure to use washers because if you dont the bolts will rub on the rear tire. the tabs are about 1/8" thick and the bolts will recess deeper if you dont use washers.
rock the solo seat back into place and reinstall the bolts.

Thanks for the picks. Waiting on pegs/clevis before I install the pad on my bike. Looks like your bike is black cherry???

:DMy first mod was to take off the bicycle reflectors and down tube stickers. :D Enjoy and be safe.
