It would depend on where you are taking the bike to be painted. Alot of paint shops do not disassemble. They will contract out to another shop or dealer to do so (and will add additional $$ on top of what it cost them). If you can do it yourself it could save you some cash. I would simply request a quote for disassembly and then compare that to the time, effort and skill level you have. If it is worth it to do it yourself, go for it. If not, then maybe shop around for the best price.

As said, its powder, not paint. And in order to do that correctly, you have to completely tear down the bike. Then have it acid dipped then repowdered. Don't let anybody talk you into bead blasting cause you need it completely stripped. Any extra powder will add problems when you put it back together. You have tight tolerances and extra powder on each side of say your rear fender will push the struts out and you won't get the rear fender to mount. Also you have to have all the mounting points of the drivetrain and such left bare metal to ensure positive mounting and good grounds.

I did this last winter so I have a few pieces of knowledge on the job.

After the acid dip

I have seen a number of bikes with painted frames. While powder coating is more durable, it is not the only method of paint on the frame. Many riders will have frames custom painted (with flames, kameleon paint, pearl, etc.) to match their tins.
