Paint saver removal ?

I bought a new gas cap to replace the original landmark cap and paint saver. I borrowed a removing tool from a buddy and the paint saver was so tight I broke the tool. I didn't put heat to because I still had gas in the tank and was worried about my paint. Is there a better way to remove the paint saver? So far no damage to the bike !

Unfortunately since you broke the tool, heat might be your only choice if it isn't epoxied in like mine was, mine had to be cut out. I also tried a 2-1/4 hitch ball, the 1-1/4 threads allowed it to thread into the paint saver, I then tightened the hitch ball nut to the paint saver to try and lock the threads on the paint savor, then try and turn the ball out with the paint savor on it, and I tried to heat the ball with a heat gun to transfer the heat into the paint savor, however this did not get it loose but it had a much stronger hold on it than the tool.
But as I've said before mine was epoxied in and had to be cut out, DO NOT try a hammer an chisel, I did and caved the top of the tank in. Good luck

Is there a good chance I will screw up the threads on the old paint saver trying the hitch method ? If it doesn't come out I don't want to be screwed. Also when you cut out the paint saver did you have to get a new bung welded on?

The threads on the 2-1/4 ball hitch screwed right into the paint savor, so I would say no.
If you have the new paint savor to go in, you can see how deep the threads are if you use a dremel to cut a slit in it. my bung had to be replaced because I caved the tank in.

It came off without any damage ! I ended up using a sheet of plastic to protect paint and used a 24" pipe wrench. It took it off no problem. I have new cap on and I am a happy camper.
How the heck did that work? Did you thread something in the hole?

All I did was lay the pipe wrench on its side carefully and grabbed the eigth inch edge carefully. It broke it loose with little to no effort. Leverage was king I guess. With the landmark tool and crescent wrench it wouldn't budge and actually broke the tool. Just make sure you tape up tank good I used a thin plastic counter matt and cut a hole in to fit it under the paint saver and then taped it off with painters tape.

Good job:old2:
When the guy cut mine out he said there was no way it was unthreading because the epoxy they used was even down in the threads between the paint saver and the bung

Mine was to full of grey jb weld or epoxy. The hardest part was cutting all that out of the threads with a razor blade. That took about 30 min.

What exactly do you mean by "cut out"? Didn't have to cut the tank itself did you??? I'm pretty sure Travis from Tampa BigDog epoxied mine in... and I'll be needing to repaint soon, so I'm kind of anxious about it coming off.

I had to cut mine out too. I cut it in 4 places, like cross hair pattern looking for top. I was repainting, so not overly concerned about paint.

I just used a razor blade to remove the old epoxy that was all over the threads on the bung so I could screw in the new gas cap. No damage to the paint or the tank.

He cut it with a cut off wheel to remove it and the threads were screwed up so he cut the bung out and welded a new one in.
