Paint bubbleing up at the gas cap opening

has anyone experienced having the paint bubble up right at the outer edge of the gas cap bung? Mine is just starting to do so. I talked to Mike Bowers at Blackdog Cycles on Friday about it at Carlisle. He said we need to take digital pictures of it and leave the bike with him during the off season for approximately 6 weeks while BDM gets the tank sent back to them and repaints it or replaces it. My question is, did this happen because there is a faulty gasket between the bung and the tank? Is there a gasket between them ?

you cant top off these bikes is what i have learned BLUE,IT CAUSES THE GAS TO SIT UP AROUND THE BUNG FOR TOO LONG ATIME THEREFORE CRAWLIN UP UNDER THE PAINT AND PEELING IT AWAY FROM TANK (sorry caps)anyway i use a little trick that most painters know and that is i will seal the end of my paint where the bung meets paint with JB weld, all i do is run 2 adjacent tapelines where the end of the paint meets the beginning of the metal of the bung(have to remove paint saver for this) and run a bead of JB weld around it so the gas cant crawl up underneath it and lift the paint off the tank,my friend has a BDM and he allways tops off and his is doin the same thing all around the gas cap bung ...however once the process has taken place you are pretty much phucked and need to repaint dont hesitate to inquire anything else i will educate as much as possibly i can .................

Jim, I only top my gas off at the lower hole in the tank not at the top. Never do that. I'm thinking it came from me hitting bumps with a full tank and somehow got between the bung and the paint edge under the bung. Mike says he's seen this a few times. Is there a gasket between the bottom of the bung and the top of the tank? Also, how long before this issue starts to grow beyond the area below the gas cap and seeps beyond where it can be seen looking down at the cap?

If BDM won't cover it, do you shoot House of color? Also, would i need to know exactly how many coats of base that BDM shot on the tank so it could be matched perfectly again?

Mine is also lifting at the front end of the tank, have been trying to ignore it as long as I can. I do not fill it all the way up but I suspect its a capillary action at the threads of the so called "Paint Saver"

Big Blue Dog, I have a 06 Mastiff that I had this happen to twice. BDM did cover it. They have re-painted the tank twice and replace the gas cap twice. The latest cap is one that clicks like on the cars. Since the latest repairs and re-paint all seems good...

Malange, Good to hear BDM stepped up. Blackdog Cycles says it has to go back to BDM for re-painting. Maybe they will up grade the cap style for me also and I can relax on this ever happening again. Thanks for the info. Thanks to Kickstart as well for chiming in. Good info all the way around.

Same happened to me. My clear coat swelled up and left a raised area where the gas had overflowed. Big dog repainted my tank and that took 4 weeks if I remember right. Like everyone says.... don't fill the dog all the way up.

Thanks DC. I always fill it to the top of the inner tank hole. Never higher than that. 4 weeks huh? I'm thinking this is a off season repair. Maybe Dec or Jan.

Jim, can you call me and we can discuss how much this might cost and how soon and how long it might take? i REALLY NEED TO FIND A WAY TO GET THIS REPAIRED. bIG dOG IS SAYING A MINIMUM OF 12 TO 16 WEEKS TO GET MY TANK BACK... if THEY COVER IT.

Owned all makes of motorcycles since 1960. Never had a paint bubble, etc. around the gas tank opening. Obviously, BDM needs to learn how to do it right the first time!!!! This is not "rocket science"!!!! Factory painters have been doing it right for many years. What's up BDM that you can't solve/avoid this problem???????????????

I just had a guy drop off his HD Road King tank to me for the same reason, except gas fumes are lifting paint on the left (where the gas gauge is) side. I don't even understand how the fumes would be coming up on that side since it is pretty much sealed off.

Hi guys, thought I'd chime in on this one. BDM usually covers this. They'll take out the paint-saver, sand down the paint, re-shoot and re-clear it, and put a new paint-saver on it. Is it fixed? Sure. Could it happen again? You better believe it! And they will continue this procedure untill your tank weighs 100lbs with all the added material they put on. TRUST ME. Also your base coat is not House of Kolor. They base with PPG. Trust the JB Weld trick.

Whats the JB weldtrick? I'm having the 95 Softtails tank repainted right now to the tune of $550.00 because of this .....and also because it fell over while two young legs were supporting it:bang: ED your still kickin ? Hope your doing good . Have not heard much out of you ?

This should do the trick.
