Better yet - here ya go, I just copied it into this post:
"Remove the bottom bolts and pull out the sissy bar. Measure up 1/2" from the bottom of the bar, and measure the bar diameter at that point. Measure the diameter TWICE, at 90 degrees to each other, in the same location. The diameter must not be less than 0.680 inches - at all.
Apparently there was a batch that were too narrow. The recall doesn't apply to any specific VIN number or year, because the bars could have been installed on almost anything.
The symptom is that the smaller diameter bars can move back and forth inside the strut holes, often enough to break the bolts - so if you've had trouble breaking bolts, you probably have one of the bad sissy bars."

Still held up for one last part, Dave. When the sissy bar popped out, it chattered down along the chrome strut, so that's being replaced, too, but they're waiting for BDM to ship one. Dealer sez it's all put together, but with the rear fender off till the strut arrives. Meanwhile, it's still snowing over here, so it's no biggie - though I do miss seeing it down in my garage.
