P8RIOT Puppy takes on a new shine

After almost two years and 9700 miles, the P8RIOT Puppy went to the dealer for its 10K service - so why not shine things up at the same time?

Lotsa parts were stripped off and sent to Meclec in California to be chromed. Here's what was left.

Here's a look at the right side of the frame. They didn't take out the motor or the transmission.

They removed the primary cover, as part of the 10K checkup - here's what the inside looks like.

Looking around the shop - there's the tank, which they buffed up a bit, and the belt.

Here's a closeup of the neck bearing, waiting for reassembly.

Last summer, the bolts broke on the sissy bar, and the left end jumped out of the hole. It ended up chafing a hole in the side of the fender. I was just sick when I saw that big bruise, but Big Dog stepped right up and repainted it under warranty. Here it is back from the Wichita paint shop, being unpacked by Tanya, who handles all the warranty claims at our most excellent dealer.

Like several others, my battery covers cracked, so Big Dog painted up another set, again covered by the warranty. The paint work was done by "juice," the talented young man who did the original job. I'm sure glad he was still there to match things up.

Here's a random assortment of chrome parts, waiting for reassembly.

That front wheel is going to be a lot easier to keep polished up now.

Here's Mrs. P8RIOT checking out that shiny new rear wheel.

Meanwhile, out in the showroom, Big Dog is helping our dealer move a brand new 2008 Pitbull.

Check out that price tag - brand new, 2008!

Well, I really don't need another Dawg quite yet - or so Mrs. P8RIOT reminded me.

I should get my bike back in a coupla weeks. It all took less time than I thought.

RAYWOOD - you'll know when I get it back - just look for that really big glow across Puget Sound to the east. :D

Awesome job! I miss the crew at Steeldreams! Really miss the breakfasts from the cafe! I bought my 2007 K9 Limited (#97) there in July 07. They won't remember me, but say "hi" if you get a chance. I bugged the hell out of Tanya about a year ago getting a number of parts - pegs, grips, etc. I heard they moved?

Ride safe. Bike looks great!

Yup, they consolidated into a shop south of Mt. Vernon, about 5 miles away. It's the same location as their RV business.

Unfortunately, that great restaurant never made a profit for over two years, so they really had to shut it down - but we sure enjoyed it while it lasted.

Very nice Wayne. Glad to see Mrs P8 looking over everything. You always need a 3rd party to 'keep it real' for ya! Besides, you're too busy drooling over all the chrome.:D

There was a recall on certain sissy bars, but I think it only affected the 18" ones. Big Dog got a bad batch from their manufacturer, where the diameter at the base (where it is inserted into the struts) was slightly too small in diameter. This allowed the sissy bar to flex inside the hole just enough to overstress the bolts, causing them to eventually crack through.

After I discovered both bolts had broken:rolleyes:, I replaced them with a higher grade. While it is probably not necessary on your bike, it wouldn't hurt. The ones I got were not chrome like the originals, but then you can't see them anyway unless you are looking up from the ground at the hole.

Here's a thread that has lots of detail about the recall: http://www.bigdogbiker.com/forums/general/673-sissy-bar-recall.html

There is a measurement you have to take on the sissy bar itself... but I don't remember what the number is. Just need a set of mics
