Overfill Primary Starter Leaking

I changed my primary fluid including removing the outer primary cover and cleaning it. I filled the 32oz of fluid in it and now the starter has a slight leak. As stated in several posts the inspection cover is useless. I cannot see the fluid level inside it. Does anyone have some tips? Thanks!

Not sure what your asking here but 32oz is the right amount of primary oil. The starter oil leak, where is it coming from? Is it coming from the bottom of the starter or where the starter bolts to the primary cover? There is an o-ring between the starter and primary cover, easy enough to replace. If there is oil coming from the starter and on the bottom of the starter then probably the starter jack shaft oil seal, there was a problem with these seals and supposedly up-graded by BD.

I will have to look exactly where it is coming from. I only noticed a slow drop of oil dripping at the bottom of the starter. Is there a seal/o ring near the bottom?

First of all, you do not have to remove the primary cover to see the oil level, just drain the fluid and replace with 32oz of primary fluid. Second, you starter is probably leaking from within the starter it's self as Ruff stated. You can probably get away with using the starter for a while but it's just a matter of time till the starter will need to be rebuilt. Do what I did, remove the starter, take it to a auto electric shop and have them replace the jack shaft seal, I my case though I waited and the oil leaking passed the seal took out the brushes and the armature, you can also pick up a spare starter on e-bay.

If the starter/primary o-ring is leaking, oil will be running down the inside of the primary cover. If oil is dripping off the bottom of the starter and no oil on the primary then suspect the starter jackshaft seal. The starter can be saved if you catch it soon enough before the starter windings get saturated with oil, if not then new starter it is.

I hate getting old! I put the dog on a jack tonite and wiped the oil off of it. I took it for a ten minute ride and put it back up on the jack. It was clean still. It was then that I realized when I changed the engine oil and primary oil I spilled just a little bit down the side of the oil fill. I'll run her tomorrow down to Seaside Heights for the HOG rally there and see if she leaked(marked her spot) when I get home. I hope she stays dry!

I'm a new K-9 owner. I purchased a 2007 a month ago. I have a real oil leak, not a spill.

It leaks from behind the primary, behind the clutch.

Perhaps this seal btween the starter and primary cover is my issue.

The starter operates fine. It doesn't leak just sitting there.

Is this starter/primary seal in the primary oil level?

Do I need to remove the clutch basket to get to this seal or just remove the starter?

Thanks

Ok, one easy way to tell where your oil is leaking from is to use a small mirror held under the frame. Look at the underside of the starter, if you see a drip of black burnt oil, it's more then likely your starter jack shaft seal.

Starter Jack shaft seal

The oil does seem to be coming from around the starter to inner primary connection.

From reading the forum posts, it sounds like I can replace the seal by removing the starter. Is this correct?

Is this seal an o-ring or a gasket? Hopefully this is a seal the dealer has in stock.

I don't yet understand how forum members are getting primary oil inside the starter. My Harleys have never been able to pass oil to the inside of the starter. I suppose I'll find out this afternoon when I remove the starter.

Thanks for the helpful information.

:roll:LMAO. Don't hate getting old. Be like me and know what the other option is and be happy to get old. Besides doing this kinda stuff gives the pups something to laugh at. We laugh cause we know they'll get here soon enough:D. Hope a little spilled oil was all it was. :)

Still leaking!

I checked it and it is leaking from the center of the starter where there is a seam. See attached picture. Disregard the seam leak. I checked it again. It is leaking from the bottom hole where everyone else reports. Damn!

I am betting on the starter jackshaft oil seal. If you pull may as well replace both.

My K-9 had the same problem until this afternoon. I've only owner this bike for a few weeks and I have been going throughout all the maintenance.

I drained the primary oil at out comes almost 2 quart of black diarrhea. Also the primary vent was plugged solid with solid clutch dust and oily crap.

No wonder the oil was virtually pumped out through the starter.

Tightened the primary chain, fresh primary oil, new gaskets, no leaks, happy new big dog owner.

No one knows where to buy the seals. Even Biker's Dream Atlanta who seems like they can get anything! Have you found anything to match the o-ring for where the starter goes in the primary? I know I saw someone post it is .70 in thickness.

I took my starter to some amish electric auto repair guys, they replaced my seal, o-rings bearings, brushes and armature for $80.00.
