over speed Speedometer

I first looked thru the tech section to see if there were any threads about over speed, have not found any. Lots of "not working" etc, but did not see any on the over speed issue.

I start riding and with in seconds My speedometer goes to the right at max and sets there. as I slow down sometimes it will come down but mostly stays in the max speed. it is counting extra miles like I am running 120 mph plus at any speed I ride.

Has anyone ever had this happen or is there a thread already about this I can look at.
Thanks for any input

Although I have built a 57 panhead from the ground up, never have I even touched anything with all this electronics.... i'm an old school and this stuff is a bit confusing to me. Sometimes I think " give me a set of points, carb, and just spark plugs and I will be fine"...Still trying to figure out how to get the tank off the bike, Cannot find any repair manuals... I have traced the wires and see a little tear dropped shape thing on the trans, thinking this is the sensor. I will remove it and give it a good cleaning... Hope that solves it. thanks for the response.

You are correct, the tear drop fitting with one screw holding it on is the sensor... :D :2thumbs: Good luck and hope that's all it is...

I had toruble with mine jumping up and down. Sometimes it would go over 100 and others it would read 0. I tried cleaning to no avail and also double checked connections all the way to the speedo...in the end I replaced the sensor and all was well.
