Have a 2002 Pitbull. When i get stuck in traffic bike over heats & engine kills. Have to wait a few minutes before i can restart the bike. Thought about adding the BDM oil cooler. Would this help? Any suggestions why this is happening? Very aggravating sitting on the side of the road waiting for the engine to cool.

Oil cooler will likely not solve the problem. I have one and sitting in hot traffic, the heat has no place to dissipate. I'd be more concerned that you're letting the bike overheat to the point of the engine shutting down--good chance for some major damage as the oil has broken down to the point it's not supporting the lubrication of the engine.

Recommendations (in priority order);
1) Do a "Hoat" and split lanes to get moving
- cops really don't give an F if the traffic is stopped
- a cop stuck in traffic isn't gonna waste his time and
knows what you're doing anyway
2) Pull the hell out of traffic and take another route
3) Pull over to the side for an extended smoke break

The bottomline is when your motor starts pushing 280 degrees or more, it's itching to seize up and become a boat anchor.

Good luck...

sounds like the ignition is getting too hot. some nose cone ignitions are prone to overheat due to pipes that wrap close to the cone.

Some other things to check is your tappet screen to ensure oil is getting to your topend. Clean filter, a full oil tank, no kinks in the oil lines and plenty of pressure. Do you have a gauge on it?

Also, think about running a synthetic.

I'm with Marv... the problem is either electrical or possible vapor lock from the gas cap or fuel line running between the jugs.
