Other options then EHC

I'm a fairly new Big Dog owner and have been reading alot of horror stories about EHC's. I'm not trying to jinx myself since mine has been fine, but I was wondering about viable options replacing EHC before something goes wrong. I'm sure this has been discussed before.

Wire Plus, Motogadget, or total replacement of all electronics and controls.

But read some of the threads more people do not have problems than those that do. Don't sweat it and ride it until it breaks. Do the preventative stuff, like dielectric grease, tightened connectors, NO WATER etc. I know some folks have bought a WP for the shelf until they need it since there is a long wait for them. I'm just counting my blessings and riding mine.

I'm with 1BADK9, as long as you take care of the doggie it'll take care of you. Don't do dumb things like jump start the thing off a running vehicle or try to splice in an alarm system or a slew of LEDs. If your going to add all that stuff run it straight to the battery and or add a switch to control them separate of the bikes operating system. You splice it into the system, the EHC will notice the extra draw and shut your shit down... :D :2thumbs:

Then DON'T jinx yourself. I rewired, and I'm happy with this fix for my own reasons. Any option works as long as it's done correctly, all have different advantages over other choices. But don't go looking for trouble before it arrives, or you just might find it. For now, enjoy the ride, it's almost September, time grows short.

Can someone explain to me how the two units work and differ from EHC units? Do they have resetable fuses, inline fuses etc? Thanks!

The pda, wire plus, and m unit have all been discussed here in detail. Do some searches, and you should find all the info you need. If not, post again with specifics and answers will follow.

I did some research and didn't find the anwsers I asked! What are the benefits over EHC unit? Are they fused or the same as EHC in that when one thing goes wrong you can't fix it since being a sealed unit.

Pdm and wire plus are proven replacements. Many installs with thousands of miles on them.
I know the pdm from bigdog performance parts is individually wired for each function. There are two main pieces, the pdm and the hci (hand control interface). Both are mounted in the battery box. The unit also comes with a complete wire harness that you route up the backbone and also attach wires in and around the battery box.
Someone with a wire plus installed can provide details on that unit. It was first used as a replacement so there are many more installed. The main drawback is you have to individually crimp every wire connection. The pdm unit is already done and you simply unplug the old and plug in the new.

I've read that the PDM does not allow self cancelling turn signals or does the control device fix this?
pdm does not self cancel turn indicators, but I use hand signals anyway. Hand signals are much more visible than a small blinking light bulb. So was not a deciding factor for me.

Thanks for the replys! I'm still trying to find out if these systems have a fuse type set up or are they sealed units like EHC. Basically, I am wanting to know if somthing goes one with one circuit can it be fixed with a fuse or does the whole unit have replaced like the EHC.

I wish I had more money.
I'm thinking they're sealed. I think Amy @ Strokers was saying she ordered three wp and all three had bad modules and needed to be replaced.

Speaking from experience my WP blew the low beam and ignition circuits when my VR went up in smoke. Talked with the WP people and to paraphrase "your shit outta luck".
