Open primary

First off, I'd like to put an open primary on my 2008 Mutt. I just think open primaries were made for choppers. Of course I know nothing about the mechanics of an open primary. What do you guys think, good idea or naw? What are some things I should know before going this route? Is there a downside? Of course then there's the other problem, that I can't even find one! If anyone has any leads in that department, I'd appreciate it! Thanks in advance!

Biggest problem is finding one (and a good one). I have been looking for a while.
It's really a preference thing. I love the look and have had them before on other bikes. However they can have some advantages (keeping oil from getting into starter, leaks etc since it seperates the units) but same can be said on the other side.
Downside as far as I can tell is just the safety, they increase the width, and can be a problem for people not used to them. The better built ones have it sorted out and older/inferior ones had problems with the components not holding up...now biggest problem is finding one. Again it is all preference.

IMO, they are just a very big expense for an appearance. But if that’s what you like all good.

The larger 3” and 4” get into your legs too. I like having the option of putting my foot on top of it on longer trips too.

Got my Baker open primary, and had it shipped to me this week! I'm going to take it to the shop, hopefully next week. They are more qualified to make any needed improvement for the beast! Thanks for the input, I'm pretty excited!

What shop are you taking it to? Barnes performance is a couple hours drive for you, in Endwell NY. If you'd like to take a 2 hour drive northwest I would put it on for you, cheapest route as my shop rate for BDB members is $0/hr.

Thanks, I'll keep you in mind. I already have a shop here in Rochester that I'm taking it to.

Where did you find the Baker open primary for the Big Dog?

I followed up on a lead to Ross Cycles, in Missouri. As far as I know, it was the last one. The only other lead I had was to Belt Drives, LTD. in southern California. They are looking for people that want them. If they get enough requests, they'll manufacture them. I also talked to them, it sounds like they're ready to go, they just need a bike to mock up on. That's all I found. Happy hunting, I wish you luck!

Yeah, I posted on that had talked to a guy named Scott I believe. But last time I talked to him he needed like 100 people to sign up for them to make a run at it. And he only had like 40 including myself. So I figured it was a no go since he didn't get the 100 he needed. But I'll call Monday and try to find out what all he needs. And if he needs a bike and will help with shipping, I'll send him my Mastiff with a baker belt drive already on it. That way they can just remake the mounting plate which seems to be the biggest issue on the rsd models. And when he's done if I can get one for my Bulldog bagger or have the 1st one made at cost of course I'm game....
