Gas,

With the open primary have you had any problems with your passenger's foot rubbing on the primary? How close is the foot peg to the belt?

Shawn
NO... pass pegs are miles from that!!

And as far as weight... hell yeah WAY lighter!!! Just by the loss of the inner primary and the belt vs chain.

Love the looks and the whine..... how about the costs between the different brands ?? Clutch operation ,good/bad.. And maintance ? do you have to adjust belt tension ...is it a bitch , is it done with tranny mounting/motor? And lastly how is clutch service life.

It will cost ya $3k-$4k ruffly depending on how big and OBS or not.

Clutch operation I think is 2 fold better. Mine is a solid one piece backing plate /inner primary and there for no adjustment or maintance. Others like Alhalls primo have a 2 piece backing plate/inner primary and there is some adjustment in there. Now how often is it needed... don't know but I'm guessing not often.

Clutch life is what you make of it.... as you have seen with bdm clutchs... newbie vs raywood.

I'm not sure why, but you don't see to many recommending Baker's Synchronous Drive. I would think it would be a perfect match.

Yeah, Sailor in AZ has one that he had completely chromed before installing it. I was surprised at how quiet (a factor for me) it was.
They are pricey though!

I did a Google search for RMD and BDL and found nothing. Does anyone have a link to some that would fit my application? Bad as I hate to say it, I really don't have 3 or 4 thousand to spend on one, maybe a thousand.
There is only a few that will fit the 05 and newer trans. And I don't think that is one of them.

Karata

Since you asked - wisdom may be found in just one word "KARATA"

Need more...please read this linkhttp://www.bigdogbiker.com/forums/drive-train/5979-karata-part-i.html

Have a 07 - K9, have installed, removed and re-installed the 4" Karata open primary and only have praise (I will have another post as to why the re-install - nothing to do with the open primary itself). There is a ton I have learnt in the process and I can vouch for the engineering that goes into making the Karata. All considered it is $$ well spent and you do GET what you pay for.

Some IMPORTANT POINTS:
* It is a RSD open primary. (All mgf. do NOT make them)
* You have a choice 2.5, 3, 4 and 5 inch (the 4" adds HP, not sure how much but I CAN FEEL the DIFFERENCE and PULL)
* The Piranha clutch is IT:up: . NO MORE trying to find neutral, switching gears is like butter...
* You have a choice of OBS (outer bearing support) one to suite your style and bike
* SINGLE piece back plate...no one and I believe NO ONE other than KARATA has this. (with the later models the starter is completely concealed, giving it a CLEAN look)
* Easy and perfect install - all you need is a wrench and I use an "impact gun" recommended. (In reading Gas (Chris') install I remember him having a difficult time when installing the open primary..had to remove the tranny...Gas please chime in, I may be wrong)
* American built and sturdy as a horse. Not going out of business like other competitors
* Always in stock and ready to ship
* Jim, Mr. Karata himself - GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE

There you have it....need more feel free to PM me. Basically you can't go wrong with the KARATA, that's my opinion and more.

You are right on one great piece being the Katara...

You are wrong on they being the only ones with a one piece backing plate... my RMD is that way.

Impact unfortuantely is needed althoguht you may be able to work around that...

100% right on Jim having great customer service!!

Stand corrected - thanks guru GAS.

However stand by my recommendation and post, as most of us - make that all of us, who have delt with Jim and the Karata product line will.

Guru nothing... you stated alot of great facts and your last post is spot on as well.

One of the things that put me to the RMD was that it came chromed, a good banditt clutch (who's owner is like Jim and wonderfull to work with), and was a couple bucks cheaper for sure.

I have the Karata 4" w/o OBS. I f'n love it. smoother, quieter, and the clutch, holy shit! Jim offers great customer service and the install was easy as hell. As stated you will need an impact gun, loctite, beer and about 4 hours.

Best mod I have made. Pics are in my gallery.

Allow me to add... due to recent events with another RMD owner coupled with a great product and super customer service from jim at karata, if I had to suggest to a friend which system to buy, it would most likely be a katara.

Yeah Karata....

I have been speaking with Jim on this as well. I guess when you call it a "single piece backing plate" that isn't just talking about the large piece. From Karata's POV any spacer added to the tranny or motor no longer makes that a single piece. If that is the case, then Staffy, your comment on karata being the only single plate may in fact be true if primo or bdl doesn't have one like theirs. My RMD has a single plate from the motor to the tranny. But behind each end is a spacer, which I have been told makes it a 3 piece by Karata definition. I can't argue with the guy, he knows more than me for sure.

For me it was simpler...

2 piece Primo

"1" piece RMD
