I just put a spike air filter on my BD. It has open slots that expose the filter. what will happen if it gets rained on

While you're riding...if it is raining hard enough, your bike will probably crap out. Wimmer sells an accessory called a "rain sock" to use with some of thier filters, I have one and it does help. In addition to providing some help with heavy rainfall, it acts as a prefilter.

I have the spike air filter also. I've rode in some pretty hard rains and never had a problem. I don't have the prefilter. But if I run across a prefilter one day I'll buy it just to have one.

I have a completely open Wimmer set up, got caught in some fucker rains and the bike ran like shit, practically stalling out. I'm guessing that having the entire surface of the air filter open versus the spike with the chrome spike cover over the filter plays a part in whether or not things get bad in rain storms.

I ran into a shit storm this weekend on my Mastiff, ran like a sick puppy. Gimped it home and dried out the filter and had to change plugs. I will be buying a rain sock before Sturgis

I heard a pair of panty hose will work in a pinch, and maybe cheaper then a rain sock... especially if you take them from your wife.

I had a spike on my Harley and in the rain, it would cough and spit if I was going to fast. If I would slow down a bit, it was fine.

I run a dual stack Wimmer set up, I've got caught in some nasty boot filling rain and have never had a problem with the engine wanting to crap out! The fucking direction light controls have had a shit on me, but never the motor

It does run like shit in the rain. I have a twisty spike air cleaner. I got caught in the rain comming back from Tennessee. I had some K&N prefilter covers on it that got soaked and the engine just crapped out trying to go up the mountains. I had to take the wet covers off and it ran but not great. I would definetly buy some rain covers and not the prefilters.

I'm surprised to hear you guys say that. I have the Stainless Creations filter turned up. I ran it for a summer with no filter at all, and this past summer with a screen. I did drill a 1/4" hole in the bottom so it could drain if it was raining. Anyway, I've been caught in some motherfuckers this year and never a cough? Most recently on Skyline Drive on our way to Hoats for about 5 miles of some seriously hard rain and no issue.
