? on 3" BDL belt drive noise

I have the 3" Belt drive on my 04 chopper. Whenever I am idling it sounds like a rattling noise coming from the front of the belt drive. Guy at work with a chopper said it sounds like the "plates" are rattling and need to be replaced sometime, but not an emergency thing. Anyone heard of this before? If you have how hard is it to do it yourself? Thanks

Well the plates (clutch) are at the rear. Belt drives are noisy and when you pull in the clutch thye do make a clattering sound. So the question I guess would be is it excessive? You might want to check around with some other in your area. May be normal. Ya got any more info. Clutch slipping, shifting okay, finding neutral okay ?

All of the shifting, finding neutral is good. Sounds a little excessive, but maybe that is just the way it sounds. I will check around. Thanks for the reply

extra quiet drive

1st remove your clutch plates

2nd reinstall with a fiber first

You'll end up with 2 steels, recess both plates with a 3/8 drill bit. Do NOT drill through the plates, just make like 6 small recesses on both plates.

With Permatex " The right stuff" silicone, make a small bead on one of the recessed sides.

Stick both plates together, the recesses hold the plates together.

Wipe off any extra silicone off the plates, as you don't want it to stick to a fiber plate like I did and loose neutral, and have to pull the clutch apart again.

install the steels, with the lighter one on the outside. (likely small dimples on this one and you want to have it on the outside.

Tighten up the clutch and leave for a couple hours or overnight. Runup, presto no cluch noise, same power.

BDL's rattle a lot. Never heard of the silicon thing but it's worth a try. If you are sure it's coming from the FRONT of the drive, make sure your front pulley isn't coming loose.

Which BDL?

Covers?

Outer support?

Does it make the noise running in neutral without pulling the clutch lever?

Always hated the rattle, you could here it down the block. People always asked me what was that noise. Sheepishly I told them it was the rather expensive open belt drive with a quiet clutch.

When American Ironhorse went under, I search and picked up a texas chopper chrome frame and anniversary tins. Built it from there. with a Demon 114" Engine and Baker trans, all chrome. V&H big radius pipes, ect, ect and BDL 3" open belt drive with a CNC chrome flame covering it.

Unfortunatly hearing that awlfull racket, actually made me not want to drive it.

So after some experimenting with some hearsay off the net, I first put the fiber clutch plate in first. Well that helped for a short while, but the outer 2 steels were making a grinding mess, and made a heck of a noise when you pulled the clutch in. So decided to combine the small with the larger steel, and the only way to do that was by drilling and filling them with a good neoprene like silicone.

Honestly can't get them apart now, and in neutral or clutch engaged there is very little noise. There is no slipping, or clutch loss, My engine is modded to 140 hp, I'd notice a problem if there was one.

Now when I pull up somewhere, stuff err in neutral, and all you hear is the rumble off the exhaust.

Wayyyyy better! and happy again.

Great Idea :2thumbs: however I think I would have gotten 5 or 6 thinner steels and thrown in an extra fiber so as not to end up with two steels at the the pressure plate end. But that is just me, remember I am a crazy former Marine, if you leave it up to me, I can fuck up a steel ball with a rubber mallet
