I'm 99% sure you have a short. The headlight is burnt out and you are still getting the blinking lights indicating a fault or over current situation. I'm not saying you shouldn't upgrade from your original EHC - but I dont believe it will fix the issue, unless its an internal short.
I upgraded to Axels unit and havent had any issues, I just have the original sitting ont he shelf as a back-up just in case. Do yourself a favor and upgrade proactively (if practical/affordable for you) vs being down and having to wait.
Plus a spare unit make for easy troubleshooting...

Good idea while you've got your tank off is pull apart all the connections, slip a piece of heat shrink wrap over them, dielectric grease in them and then heat the wrap over the plug. Waterproof and you'll know for certain your connections are all good. You'd be amazed how a tiny miss-connection will give these bikes insane electrical gremlins. There are 10 years worth of threads on this forum about said gremlins.
