Alrighty fellas I wanna pick your brain for a bit. I am currently running a Open Primary from Southern Motorcycle Works, Celtic Drive ( Ultima ) 3.34". Now the outter primary (hub/pulley) is showing some heavy wear, where the clutch plates ride. Now I am wanting to go stronger on the clutch and was looking into a Barnett Scorpion system, but I am having troubles. I am going to have to replace the outter hub/pulley and need to know if anyone has ran this set up !! Barnett is NO help what so ever with my problem. The tech says they offer nothing for me .. Anyone with any info ???

Can't offer any help with your setup but can coment on the Karata......I've been through 2 karata rear hubs in 15,000 miles. Both times Karata was obstinately claiming that I must be abusing the clutch - which is a total BS. IMO, they are simply not well constructed and I would not recommend one. Next time the hub goes bad -and I'm sure it will - I'll be switching back to the original primary.

Well I have about 10,000 mi on this hub, and I only checked it because my clutch was acting up and I thought maybe my jam nut was loosening up again.. took the entire clutch out to inspect and clean.. and low and behold noticed the groves.. Might have to just go back with and Ultima hub...

Baskets don't last long on open primarys, it's the nature of the beast. Josh you're about where I was when I changed the basket on my SMW, which is really just an ultima with a custom OBS. I think I got about 12k out of mine. Just goto Jireh and get a new one, $120. As for the scorpion, you could mount it and run without the OBS, it will work just fine on a stock motor. If you want to run the OBS you will need to get that outer hub mounted to the Barnett basket somehow. Someone with a lathe could get it done.

Hey Moe...$120 ? what all did you change.. I just got off the phone with JPcycle and looked at Jireh and that price just is not adding up.. Did you change just the pulley or did you replace the entire thing ( outter pulley, bearing, inner gear that plates ride on, along with the posts) ??? Just for the pulley JP is wanting 220 and for the entire outter and inner its 470. Let me know what you did bro !! Thanks

Jireh part # 58-734 is your rear pulley/outer clutch hub, $75. If you have grooves in your old hub, this is all you will need to replace. Why are you changing the inner hub? If you want to change the whole assembly, part# 58-728 $149.99. If you goto Jireh's website and download the pdf catalog there are exploded views of the primary with part numbers.

Not sure how well you can see this but it was a PDF and I couldn't get it to save the picture so I just took a shot with my phone.

for the guys having problems with karata open primarys, I to have same, if you get one additional metal plate then remove clutch plates install metal plate first then put everything bad like normal. this moves everything out so you are between the groves. this will double the life for you also IMPORTANT put a thin coat of anti-seize covering where the grooves are and this will stop the creeping.

Thanks Moe.. I was only asking about the inner piece, because all the sales people that I have spoken with.. HIGHLY suggest replacing both.. Of course they are out for the money.. And again thanks for the blow up of the primary.. I seen on earlier but couldnt make it out !! Thanks for the help

Oh yeah one last thing.. Talked to JPcycles.. and for the same part number their price is 219.99 plus shipping and its a special order and would take 7-10 days to get it if not longer !!!

JP is a ripoff remember Jireh is Midwest which is the distributor for Ultima so JP is just marking up in the middle.

How much are these hubs that Karata uses?

the rear karata hubs are 590.00....ouch.
Seems as everyone blows it up without any knowledge of the truth.Yes it is true that parts wear due to many things and we here at Karata have addressed all phases of the issues with our parts. Now for the truth we have sold pulley shells to members here on the forum for $225.00 so where does this $590.00 come from, maybe dealer rip off or you all know the term that comes next.
