Somebody please kick my ass if i'm wrong but doesn't the circuit breaker or fuse from the VR only operate in the charging system of the bike? I have started a BD before with out the VR hooked up. My understanding of the circuit breaker or fuse was to prevent a charge overload. The only way I see it affecting the starting of the bike is if it is not working and recharging the battery? If the bike is running and you're not getting at least 14.2 volts back to the battery then the charging sytem is not working properly correct?
Is it possible that one of the other wires of of the battery is faulty, loose, etc?

It is possible he is having a ground wire problem. But from reading what has been written and done leads me to believe he had a low battery to start with when the problem started. His circuit breaker for the VR was malfunctioning and not letting the battery charge. Now he's on a tender from reading up on what he needs to do and that has given him a revitalized battery. Wiggling the breaker and it starts leads me to believe he wiggled something else too without knowing...could be ground or the hot.

Will someone please kick my ass also!??

my bike did the same thing, I started keeping a jumpur wire in my bag so I could unplug the starter selonoid wire and jump to the hot on the battery. both times mine had this series of starts and no start it was the ehc that got replaced by the dealer. the click you hear is more than likely the compression release, you can feel them move thru the hole in the top of the rocker boxes.

sounds like the starter to me.check and see if you get battery voltage to the solenoid on the starter when you hit the start button, next check the battery cable at the starter for batt.voltage, then check your ground cable on the battery and make sure it is tight and clean on both ends.if all checks out ok then replace the starter and you will be good to go

Well, I called R & B cycles today. I talked to a guy in the service dept. He stayed on the phone with me for a while. Very nice fellow. He told me that the CB going to the VR shouldnt have anything to do with it starting. He told me to take the right hand controls apart and make sure that the control buttons are plugged in securely. If they are, then he doesnt have a clue what it is without the bike. I told him how I could thump the CB and it will start every time. He didnt understand it either. I sent off my warranty transfer two days ago. I reckon as soon as it is changed over, I am taking her in vor a fix. Just another bit of info, he said 90% of the time when a Big Dog wont start, it is the battery. So I told him that unless I am "the Fonz" from Happy Days, the battery doesnt have any trouble starting it. I just have to thump the CB. I did ride today after outtin git all back together, stopped 4-5 times. Started back up evertime without my magical powers. Huh?

Check the copasitors (sp) in your ignition. If they are bad, it wont start....I had a 69 mustang with the same problem...

He's telling you to check the same thing I suspected it would be. Mine did that once but only once. Click Click. Then poof. It was the right hand control board. 60 dollar part. From the dealer washing it. It might have dried out and your description seems to lean that way.

I know the CB should be plastic... but is there some type of grounding issue in the CB if its not all plastic?

Could I get more info on this comment. The Starter has two wires right? A green one from the starter relay to the starter selonoid. And a hot wire direct to the battery. SO to use the jump wire, do you jump from the positive battery post to the where the green wire on the starter selonoid wire goes. Thanks for the help.

Ok guys. I spent about 7 hours and R&B cycles today. And the verdict is...............BAD EHC. They said Big Dog used EHCs with some kind of a gel or silicone cover/filling for a short time period. It allowed the electronics to vibrate and create all kinds of problems. They were recalled. On the way there, my speedo and odometer quit working and my neutral light kept flickering. Red put a new EHC (the new version) on it and it is perfect, fixed all issues. I will be posting more later, but I had my ass whooped by a ridged for 350 miles today, Im going to bed.

I believe these were the "clear" potted EHC's (you can see inside them). Not all were bad though, my second EHC was clear potted and I was told it was good to go! It lasted me a couple years and is my spare now. Got a brand new one (black resin) in Sturgis this year anyway.
