Amsoil or nothing....I'm a dealer can ya tell. Seriously though, if you research it Amsoil is one of the best if not the best. And it's made in the U.S. There's an Amsoil banner on the first page of my website. Click the banner below and it will take you there.
Do you charge the same 2.95 for shipping that too??:roll::roll::roll::roll::roll::roll::roll::roll::roll::roll::roll::roll:jk

I didn't pay attention to that seriously, I will remember it the next time my stock gets low! :2thumbs:

See? This is why I suggested a folder or another member suggested a sticky where vendors who support the site can be located with their website and contact info. I would have bought all Amsoil fluids from a member here instead of searching the net and buying from an unknown. Thoughts???

I use ~ Mobil One V-Twin 20W-50 Full Synthetic. Here is what it says right on the jug: "S&S Cycle recommends the use of Mobil 1 V-Twin 20W-50 synthetic oil in its engines". That's good enough for me and my dog. I also change my oil & filter every 800 miles or so. It gets hot here in Florida, so it is cheap engine insurance & peice of mind. Available at Walmart; $8.99 a quart and NO SHIPPING!!!

Information overload

I just got my 04 BDM manual and it does not recommend synthetic oil. All I see here is people using Synthetic. I put the Mobile 1 v-twin in my ride before receiving manual.
My problem is when it gets hot I hear the valves slap whenever I accelerate. It did it before the synthetic, but now it does it more.
Now I am not sure what is the best oil to use.

Any help out there?

LifeIsGood...... I feel your pain.... Not trying to step on toes in here, just putting in my experience! This was what i sent directly to S&S and their reply to me as well. Hope this helps.... I am going to straight 50wt here in TX...

Message :
I have a 07 Big Dog K9 with the S&S 117 in it. I live in Ft. Worth, Tx with current temps at 100+. Engine has always had an annoying ticking noise since new and I just turned 1000 miles on it. I did the reccommended 1k service, changed the oil and put in reccommended Amsoil 20-50 synthetic. Since the oil change, you would think I installed marbles in the motor because the ticking noise is very loud now once it hits operating temps. I do not want to do any damage to the motor and would like to know what you guys suggest as far as oil to run in this motor here in TX. I have had many people tell me that the 117 motors are commonly noisy and the ticking is expected, but like I said, since the oil change to 20-50 syn, it is very loud now. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

REPLY:
You can run a heavier straight weight oil in the hot summer months, Synthetic oils get very thin when hot and though your engine is well protected it will be noisy. The 117" engines in the BDM bike are a little noisy due to the emissions cam and valve springs they run. I would run a straight 50 non-synthetic during hot summer months.

Thanks,
S&S

Have an 08 K9 and had a small ticking sound in the valves. Well I just did my 7500 mile service at the stealer and put in the Amsoil synthetic based on reviews in this thread. Only put 25 miles or so on it, but no more ticking (tappet) sound in valve area. Will update after a long ride, but may have a quiet motor now. This board is great, and love the dog..........

I use Lucas oil treatment in my bikes and it has always helped to reduce engine noise. I use Amsoil 20w50 all year long here in Texas.

Today I serviced my bike for the second time and I switch to amsoil and put my new K&P filter. I went for a ride after the oil change and I was aspecting the engine getting nosier but surprising it was quieter. The ticking (I think from the valve) is less noticeable.

Hey guy's,
Trying to learn a thing or two by reading all of your posts, thanks for the insight thus far!
I purchased an 05 BDM Chopper this spring with an S&S 117 with 12,500 miles on it. It had fresh oil in it when I picked it up and I have put 1300 miles on it so far. During that time I have needed to add oil equaling one quart. Does this sound like a lot? I don't see any leaks but I do notice the exhaust has a blackness to it so I'm assuming it is burning.
I just added more today and after reading some posts, saw that you should only have about 1/4" at the bottom of the fill tube. Mine has about 1", do I need to suck some back out?

I switched from Redline to Amsoil (both synthetic) last summer at my 5K service.
Prior to that, I would go through about a quart every 1,000 miles or so - don't know where, as bike didn't leak, smoke, etc..

Once I switched to Amsoil (including the Amsoil filter), my bike uses no oil.
I check regularly and it's always at or very near the full mark.
Seems to run better with Amsoil, too...but maybe it's my imagination.

Whatever, I'm sticking with Amsoil (no pun intended!). :yesnod:

With Mobil 1 20W-50 I use 10 oz in 2500 miles, with Amisoil 20W-50 I do not use any oil in 2500 miles. I will stick with Amisoil too.

south florida heat

I bought some this year with the intention of running it next summer , My thoughts it might quite down some of the top end noise? I'm going to give it a try

I use a full synthetic 10W60 oil here in Germany.

Why not use a thin oil when cold and having the oil coming quickly to where it's needed plus a stable 60 grade oil when hot?

For me the best of two worlds..

Royal Purple 20-50, redline and shockproof. I do not know what the previous owner ran and i don't think he knew either, so i decided on the purple as i can buy it local. If they quit carrying it i will switch to amsoil as i have used both and they both are great. Just turned 10,000 and she purrs like a kitten. I do not take my Harley or my Dog to the shop. If i do it i know it is done right. If your going to own a Dog, learn to service it.
