Oil/Engine Temperature

Being a newbie to the big vtwin world I have noticed that the bike runs very hot. Last night I took about an hour ride it was about 70 degrees out got home and about 2 hours later when I went out to cover the beast the engine was still very hot to the touch. Is this normal for this type of engine? From reading thru the forum there are a lot of recommendations to install OP temp gauge and a OP gauge which I intend to do eventually. Any thoughts on the oil temp gauge offered by BDM? Any suggestions for OP gauge?

As always thanks for the input.

yeah thay run hot.. not as hot as a twin cam... my oil temp with 1 cooler instaled run about 200 on a hot day.. thats taken in the oil tank.. I got the oil temp gauge from bdm that replaces the cap.. depends on where your talking about the heat.. thay are air cooled so thay run hot..

Yeah I know it's not your moped motor was just curious about the heat in general. As mentioned it sat for 2 hours and the motor was still hot to the touch not quite burn hot but close...have to make sure the rug rats stay away .

Oil cooler probably wouldn't hurt either but just don't like the look of the oil cooler hanging on the down tube I think it takes away from the clean look of the bike.....but I guess it is better to be safe than sorry... a good looking bike is no good if you can't ride it cause the motor is shot:D

I pamper my bikes.

When I park my bike at the house I have a fan aimed at the engine to cool it off.

It also keeps the fumes from coming into the house.

I know what ya mean when I put my bikes in the shop after riding I make sure the a/c is turned down for a while from 75 to about 65 to help em cool off & a fan..:2thumbs: after thay are cool I wipe em down..
