I have an '07 chopper S&S 117, with the S&S 600 cam just got oil temp. gauge,
a BDM oem, that threads onto the fill. Does anyone know what the normal oil temp. or around what it should be using a synthetic. i'm reading about 70 degrees, when I'm riding in 60 degree weather, which I'm not agreeing with too much, may need a better gauge

Just a guess but I doubt the sensor is in the oil. My 2005 runs around 275 after a good run. I use Amsoil 60 wt and have an oil cooler.

S&S recommends oil temperature be between 180 to 250 degrees fahrenheit or use an oil cooler to maintain this (2008 service manual)

Funny, I was concerned I was running too hot and didn't have anything on the bike so I grabbed my digital BBQ meat tester: 205 degrees.

FYI,

I made a run to and from Austin Texas in around 99 degree heat and never saw over 210 degrees oil temperature with Mobile 1 Syn Oil. I saw 225 degrees in the parade down town. I usually run between 175 and 200 on daily trips. No oil cooler needed here. :D

I GOT THE STOCK BD THREAD ON GAUGE, WAS RIDING THIS WEEK IN 106 DEGREES, MY GAUGE WAS READING 160. ALSO HAVE SINGLE OIL COOLER, AND RUN ROYAL PURPLE SYNTHETIC THROUGHOUT 20-50.
DON'T KNOW IF I BELIEVE IT, BUT I DO KNOW THE SENSOR IS IN THE OIL.

I agree with what S&S recommends. 250 being the max for conventional oil. Around 212 is perfect as it burns off the water and contaminents.

I HAVE THE BIG DOG OIL TEMP GAUGE DIP STICK, AND THE HIGHEST IT'S EVER GOTTEN IS 160, AND LIKE I SAID I'M OUT HERE IN VEGAS AND IT READS THAT IN 106 DEGREE HEAT, EVEN THOUGH I USE ROYAL PURPLE SYNTHETIC 20-50, THAT DIPSTICK GAUGE CAN'T BE RIGHT
