hey folks. wife and i head out this weekend to Fredericksburg.roughly 70 miles or so.Great ride, Cruised bout 50-55 all the way about 2200 to 2500 rpm. when we get off interstate , about a mile into town , sittin at a light ( lots of people and bikes around:angry: ) i feel bike start to run differently ,light turns and smoked the street till next block. im sure it was oil . it stopped smoking right away. hasnt happened again last night or on ride home today. i have posted similar situation before as this is probably 4th time it has happened within 6 to 7000 miles.oil clean (amsoil) not overful. should i be worried????? i want to pull it down but thought id get some input. 12,540 miles on it.it runs so good and happens so infrequently. thanks in advance! was high 80s yesterday.

Sounds like oil from the crankcase breathers that run into the air cleaner. My Texas Chopper did the same thing until I had both vent lines routed to the bottom of the bike and not the air cleaner.

Tx Chop is right. My 05' chopper used to do that. I wound up putting in the newer breather valve instead of the geared one behind the cam cover. No probs so far.

TX ,on my bike i have hose from rear cylinder head to carb backing plate.it has plastic valve inline. the front head has smaller hose to top of carb (looks like it anyway) are these hoses you are refering to? and wat change did you make?

the difference is the original one has a gear that keeps it in time with the camshaft. This geared valve rotates and only opens and lets some pressure off when the geared valve and the opening in the eengine block line up. The new one has a spring steel valve on it and lets pressure off whenever there is enought case pressure to overcome the spring pressure (on the new valve) and doesen't depend on the cam timing.

the rear cylinder breather hose (with one way valve) normally goes to the carb backing plate but that was soaking my air filter and dripping down the side of the engine after long rides. I moved that line to a puke can to catch oil if any more comes out. I dont want oil to drain under my bike and oil up my rear tire. Good way to dump the bike! I blocked off the small front line. S&S says it isn't needed on their website.

wen this happens it is alot of smoke out exhaust , i dont have any excessive oil on air filter though. im lookin at s&s now.

Pull the one-way valve and clean it out. If it sticks and does not open and close freely, get another one from the dealer (about 8 bucks). Also check both hoses for cracks (rear head to air cleaner backing plate & front heat to carb) and replace if loose, cracked or brittle. I had the same problem when the dealer replaced my heads, cylinders, pistons, rocker boxes. The one-way check valve was re-installed backwards. Once it was reversed, no more smoke. The white ring on the valve should face the rear head.

There have been issues(sometimes intermittent) with the S&S breather systems on the 4.125" Super sidwinder motors.
The way I set all of them up is:
Remove vacuum hose to carb from front head,and plug both holes.
Add a longer piece of hose to the one way valve on the rear head,and vent to street or catch can.
Remove a fitting on the rear of the motor case(near oil pump),install a hose barb,one way valve(black and white plastic valve),and hose,and vent to the street or catch can.....:up:
I don't like or use catch cans,but if you must,you must.

As an afterthought,I've found from other members,that B.D. has left breather valves out of some engines they've assembled...........:angry:
