Oil level

SKOGDOG

One of the old ones.
Blacktopper and I rebuilt my 2008 K9 due to a bad ex valve guide. Decked and bored the jugs, new cam, rebuilt heads, etc. I somehow managed to retain a problem with my oil system.
Symptoms:
The oil level drops after the engine is shut off. You can check the oil and get an accurate reading just after shutting down. If I wait 5-10 minutes, the oil is not visible on the dipstick, nor is there any to be seen pooling in the bottom of the oil filler neck. Empty as my pocket. Hotter the oil is, the quicker it drains.
SO--- you'd think that The fix is to re-seat the check valve in the oil pump...you do this by pulling off the inner cap on the oil pump and removing the spring, then taking a rod and whacking the ball bearing at the bottom of that hole with a hammer so it reseats itself. And yes, I did replace the ball bearing after the violence.
But that had no effect, so figuring I was maybe too gentle, did it again. Still the oil leaks down.
SO---today I called S&S and the tech was asking Q's about the elevation of the oil reservoir etc. He seemed to think there was some kind of stand pipe in the oil reservoir that might have broken off allowing the oil to seep back. He said even a poorly seated check valve ball bearing takes a long time (hours) to seep all the oil down, so this must be something else.
I finally gave up and decided to submit this to the best wrenches I can find...
BTW..the crankcase ventilation system is functioning correctly.
Some direction, please.

Next time ya fire the bike up, but some light in the oil tank and look for the return flow. It should look like it's being added to the top of the oil. An inspection mirror (with light) will allow you to see the return pipe that sits above the oil. IF the check ball is not the problem, that's the only source left. I've never heard of a return pipe coming loose, but I'm sure it can happen.
