Oil Leak?

OK need some help here, I pretty much have my Dog running in tip top shape now with some maintenance and preventive maintenance I have done for the last month. One thing I cannot figure out is I seem to have a small oil leak that from what I can tell is coming out around the back of the Tranny and running down the frame rail and dripping just before it gets to the kick stand!:angry: Now here is the strange part it only leaks when I take the bike out and run it hard down the highway at highway speeds for an hour or so. If I let it warm up and just ride it to work which is only 7 miles now and I never really get over 50 NO LEAK!:loony: Bike is running great now but I cannot stand a leak of any kind, am I missing a overflow somewhere and this is the only reason it leaks when ran like that? I did over fill the outer primary a while back but since have drained and refilled to proper level. No bolts on Primary are loose and all the covers seem to be sealed up tight!

So any suggestion on where to look or am I still getting some blow by and just need to take my Dog out for a nice LONG HARD ride and see if that finally gets it taken care of? Going on a couple hundred mile run this weekend and do not want to have any problems!

Mine leaked on that side (I have a 04) but it came from over service a tad bit. I now have a calibrated finger to check my oil level after 45K miles :2thumbs:

Start at the bottom and get your rag out and see if you can back track the source

Have you checked the vent hose to make sure it's free and clear? How many miles are on the transmission? If over 10k, it's possible the bearings are starting to wear and can cause premature seal failure...but I would check the venting of transmission and oil level first.

Check your shifter pawl,you might have a small leak coming out there under heavy load,good luck!!

If maybe you had slightly too much gear oil in tranny would it pump thru here or just be a leak in general?

Even after the level dropped,it was still leaking a tiny bit on longer rides I would get a couple of drops,no big deal,parts are $10 from baker,but u have to pull the inner/outer to get to that seal,good luck

Yeah I think it is gear oil alot lighter in color plus can't see any leaks around inner and outer primary.

Possible that it's the o-ring on your starter? Ive heard that you can install one a little thicker and solve it. Kurtis would be the one to talk to about it, but i think that's what I read here once.

It is slightly over filled I think it is just blowing out the vent tube under higher speeds! Looks like that is where it is coming from then running down the side frame. Going to siphon some out and see if it stops then.

Is is for sure transmission fluid? If it has the original starter, it's possible it's leaking primary fluid out of it. If you take a small mirror and flashlight, you can shine up behind the primary and see exactly where the oil is coming from (the highest point)

I had same issue and posted last year about going to a size thicker on starter o ring. I lost part number on it but take your old one and just get one size thicker. Pic it up at Auto Zone. It solved my problem. Might give it a try.

Have the same leak, and when You say it, yes I have probably filled my gearbox to much and it´s comming from the vent hose.

Check the vent on back side of primary. That would put oil on frame about where you are explaining.

primary.... where it meets the engine. Often the seal gives way, oil will travell along the primary and or the frame and start dripping near the tranny. Don't rule that out or ask me how I know....
