I got the same leak on my 2005 chopper, guess i need to buy a new starter , or have it rebuilt, thought it was the primary , added the vent and now i see its comming from the hole in the starter.
what about cleaning the starter and adding the drain mod ??
Its not likely you need a NEW starter. See if you had the recall done for the starter. If not get it done, that will solve your leaking issue. They replace the starter gear bearing with a new sealed unit that doesn't allow oil past it. If it has already been done then you may have an issue with the primary vent. At the top inner edge, in the middle of the primary is a small 1/4" vent. Gently blow some air through to ensure it is venting properly. If that vent is clogged then the primary builds up pressure and will force oil through the path of least resistance, which is usually the starter. Once you solve the leak issue pull the starter, take it apart, clean it, replace the starter motor housing o ring with an o ring that is .070 in thickness and spread a little dielectric grease on it before putting it back into the starter solenoid gear housing. Perform the above stated modification to the oil return by the starter gear, excellent idea that I just did myself. Separate the gear housing and clean and grease the gears. Open up the solenoid and clean it out, appply a little dielectric grease to the moving parts and reassemble. The ball bearing that may fall out goes in to the shaft first before the spring. If any of the outter cables are degrading then cover them with a piece of dual thickness glue lined shrink tube. After reinstalling the starter go back and check the points where the large wires enter the starter. If they are open then take some black silicone, or whatever color pleases you, and squeeze it into the open points to seal them. Any of these areas left unsealed will allow water to enter your starter and corrode everything.
